Responsibilities
Summary
The Transportation Officer is responsible for securely transporting detainees and ensuring vehicles are safe and well-maintained.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct pre-trip, during-trip, and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Provide written Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) and report safety defects.
- Ensure all permits and licenses are valid before trips and notify management of issues.
- Verify safety equipment is in place before trips and report problems.
- Complete all paperwork accurately and submit reports as per policies.
- Ensure detainees are secured during transport and paperwork is properly obtained and documented.
- Follow all safety laws, policies, and procedures during transportation.
- Report accidents immediately with detailed information.
- Manage vehicle servicing and pickups.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent and applicable state employment requisites.
- At least three (3) years of experience handling prisoners or as a law enforcement, corrections, detention, or military police officer.
- Minimum age of twenty-one (21) years.
- U.S. citizenship and a valid U.S. driver’s license.
- 80 hours of certified driver’s training from an approved provider.
- Completion of an approved training program in Corrections, Law Enforcement, or Military with certification.
- No preventable accidents, suspensions, DWI/DUI, or more than two (2) moving violations in the past three years.
- Pass company and DOT drug and alcohol tests.
- Ability to work overtime and extended travel with overnight stays.
- Ability to handle physical and mental stress, work up to 16 hours, and report on time.
- Physical alertness and maturity to command respect among inmates, detainees, and staff.
- Computer skills relevant to department software.
- Possibility to obtain a USDOT medical examiner certificate after hire.
