Position OverviewThe City of High Point is currently seeking a Transit Operator I that performs responsible semi-skilled work in the operation of large passenger buses transporting passengers along specific routes and making designated stops as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Transit Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities- Operates a bus on an assigned route and schedule;
- Inspects bus and related equipment and reports defects prior to departure;
- Prepares trip records regarding fares, mileage, vehicle defects, etc.;
- Boards and off-boards passengers, including passengers in wheelchairs and similar mobility devices;
- Secures passenger wheelchairs with tie down straps in vehicle;
- Collects fares or tickets, issues and receives transfer slips;
- Announces designated bus stops;
- Provides routine information concerning schedules to passengers;
- Operates two-way radio, to inform office staff and other required personnel members of traffic delays, accidents, down traffic signs and faulty traffic signals;
- Inspects bus and related equipment and reports defects at the end of shift;
- Completes accident, incident and/or miscellaneous reports to document unusual circumstances;
- Follows safety regulations at all times and prescribed accident procedures as necessary;
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned;
- Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
Qualifications- Must be at least 21 years old
- Must speak, read, and write the English Language
- Valid Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger (P) Endorsement
- Six (6) months of verifiable experience operating a similar or larger commercial vehicle
- Must be able to drive a transit bus in typical urban traffic and work well under stress and pressure of time constraints.
- Must be able to work a variety of flexible schedules any time during the regular hours of transit operations including split-shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to work fill-in schedules to cover other Transit Operator absences as the need arises. Time Off requests are subject to adequate coverage on all shifts.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
Preferred Qualifications- Twelve (12) months of verifiable experience operating a similar or larger commercial vehicle
- Spanish Language skills
Physical Requirements- Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens and applicants.
- Visual Abilities – the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position:
- Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more.
- Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.
- Depth perception – Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
- Field of Vision – the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point.
- Accommodation – Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly back and forth.
- Physical Strength – Light to Medium Work:
- Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally;
- Exerting up to 10 pounds of force frequently;
- A negligible amount of force constantly to handle or move materials related to the position.
Mental Activity/Requirements- Reasoning - Ability to apply principles of logical thinking combined with knowledge of principles and practices of public personnel and employment laws to work tasks and handle practical situations.
- Mathematics Ability - Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Essential when making change, counting moneys and making reports.
- Language Ability - Read, Write, Speak: Ability to communicate effectively in various forms.
Environmental Conditions- Physical Surroundings: Subject to working inside or outdoors and exposed to various weather conditions.
- Hazards: Exposure to traffic jams and accidents. Work is subject to OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens.
- Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment: City transit buses and all interior components.
