Position Summary

The Pingry School's award-winning Dramatic Arts Department, located in Basking Ridge, seeks a 10-month, part-time Theater Carpenter to join a diverse academic community. The Carpenter, under the supervision of the Head of Technical Theater & Design, is responsible for the construction, mounting load-in, and strike of scenery for 4 mainstage productions per season: the fall play in November, the winter musical in February, the senior play in March, and the spring musical in April. The work hours for the carpenter are generally 2:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. daily, but can be negotiated based on availability. Safety is the primary concern, and candidates must understand safety protocol in a practicum setting. The ideal candidate should possess performing arts experience and must be able to manage heavy lifting and position set pieces according to specifications. The carpenter is committed to guiding young people as they develop their understanding of contemporary stagecraft in a student-centered theater environment. The candidate of choice seeks growth and learning every day, both personally and professionally, and inspires others to do the same through optimism, selflessness, flexibility, and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Carpentry (including finish and trim).
  • Construction, mounting, strike, and rigging of scenery from technical drawings and elevations.
  • Periodic maintenance of shop tools.
  • Supporting and sustaining a culture of access and equity in the technical theater program.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience working with Middle & Upper School students is a plus.
  • A portfolio containing samples of past theater work is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to solve problems under pressure.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to project and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Team player with a can-do attitude and collaborative spirit.
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods while performing various job duties during the course of a regular day. Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Skilled in navigating the Google Suite of applications (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, etc.).
  • Experience creating, supporting, and sustaining a culture of access and equity in the Drama Department.
  • In addition to honor and character, commitment to intellectual engagement, and appreciation for stewardship and sustainability, especially important is the candidate's ease with diverse constituencies and demonstrated commitment to an inclusive school community.
  • The salary range for this position is $18,000 to $24,000. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, education, and internal organization and peer data at Pingry are also considered.
