Job summary

Gettysburg College is seeking a part-time Technical Director/Scene Shop Supervisor in the Theatre Arts Department. The role supports rehearsals, tech rehearsals, and production deadlines with a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

Reporting to the Faculty Set Designer, with a dotted line to Campus Safety and the Theatre Arts Department Chair, you translate designs into construction tasks and lead the shop to complete them with students, ensuring safety and quality.

Qualifications

  • CPR/First Aid certification required within the first 3 months of employment.
  • A valid driver’s license is required for transporting materials and equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience in Technical Theatre or Entertainment Technology is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of carpentry, safe ladder work, and basic rigging is preferred.
  • Experience with sound systems, microphones, scenic painting, electrics, and AV technology is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Faculty Set Designer and Director to interpret scenic designs, draft construction plans, and schedule builds and installations.
  • Build and install scenery, set pieces, and stage properties using woodworking and rigging; act as the shop lead carpenter.
  • Supervise the daily operation of the scene shop, maintain tools and inventories, and keep the space safe for workshop and backstage use.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise student workers in safe use of tools; teach construction techniques and safety standards.
  • Maintain performance and rehearsal spaces, rigging, flooring, and storage areas to ensure safety for cast and crew.
  • Conduct hazard and risk assessments and maintain chemical inventories and SDS for shop materials; report safety concerns promptly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Summary

Gettysburg College is currently seeking a part‑time Technical Director/Scene Shop Supervisor to work in the Theatre Arts Department. This position will work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to support rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and production deadlines.

The position reports directly to the Faculty Set Designer, with a dotted line to the Executive Director of Campus Safety and the Theatre Arts Department Chair. It will be responsible for translating a design concept for each production into detailed construction tasks, then leading the shop to complete those tasks with students, ensuring safety and quality throughout.

Regular Duties
  • Collaborate with the Faculty Set Designer and Director to interpret scenic designs, draft construction plans, and schedule the build and installation of all scenic elements for main‑stage theatre productions.
  • Build and install scenery, set pieces, and stage properties using woodworking and rigging techniques; serve as the shop’s lead carpenter for all department productions.
  • Supervise the daily operation of the scene shop, including maintaining power tools, equipment, and supply inventories, and organizing the space to function safely as both a workshop and backstage area.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise student workers in the safe and proper use of power tools, hand tools, and basic rigging; teach construction techniques and reinforce shop safety standards.
  • Maintain performance and rehearsal spaces, including the theatre’s rigging, soft goods, stage flooring, and storage areas, to ensure spaces remain safe for cast, crew, and audience members.
  • Conduct regular hazard and risk assessments of the shop, performance, and rehearsal spaces; maintain a current chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for paints, solvents, and other shop materials; promptly report any safety concerns, incidents, near‑misses, or hazardous conditions to the Faculty Set Designer, the Department Chair, and the Executive Director of Campus Safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Rate of Pay

$22.00

Status

Part‑Time, Casual Support Staff. (No benefits associated with this casual position).
