Job summary

UC San Diego seeks a Swim Instructor to provide instruction in non-credited recreational or sports activities. The role requires independent action, initiative, and the ability to resolve issues; training others may be included.

Programs run seven days a week from 5am-10pm, with schedules set in advance with the program supervisor. The position is part-time (20%), and coverage may include weekends or daytime classes on- or off-campus facilities, with CANRA mandated reporting responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge of program activity.
• Work leadership and interpersonal skills for those in a lead capacity, and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.
• Skills to develop original ideas, creative problem-solving in varied environments including service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, and critical thinking.
• Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.
• Proficiency in the use of basic computer programs relevant to job duties.
• Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
• Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
• May work in youth camps, fitness, and outdoor programs.
• Knowledge of safety precautions and ability to ensure compliance by all class members.
• Knowledge of physical education and kinesiology (as appropriate).
• Ability to teach specified discipline to a diverse group of individuals.
• Ability to create programs geared to individual and group needs.
• Ability to handle conflict: de-escalation and maintaining calm professional environment.
• Public Speaking: comfortable with public contact.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction in non-credited recreational or sports activities.
• Attend classes that meet during early morning to evening hours seven days a week.
• May help train other program instructors.
• Resolve issues independently and with initiative.
