Job summary

The YMCA of San Diego is seeking an Adaptive Swim Instructor to deliver inclusive aquatic lessons for participants with diverse needs. You will tailor strokes, supervise pool activities, and ensure safety using adaptive techniques and positive reinforcement. This is a part-time role requiring weekend coverage and weekday evenings.

You will collaborate with staff to maintain equipment and report hazards, while fostering water independence and confidence for learners of all abilities.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older and a high school graduate.
• Ability to read and write at a functional level with adaptive training.
• Up to ten hours shadowing of a Lead Adaptive Instructor or online modules on ASD and sensory processing.
• Minimum 10-hour in-person training in adaptive aquatics.

Responsibilities

• Develops adaptive lesson plans for physical, cognitive, or sensory needs.
• Maintains supervision and pool safety rules with appropriate discipline.
• Guides incremental skill progressions at each student’s pace.
• Identifies and corrects improper strokes using positive reinforcement and adaptive cues.
• Communicates with students using cues tailored to their communication style.
• Administers First Aid and CPR/AED as needed.
• Ensures pool environment and equipment are accessible for sensitivities.
• Maintains gear and reports hazards to Aquatic Director.
• Collaborates with instructors, directors, and staff to foster a positive culture.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
