Job summary

Rochester Institute of Technology invites applications for a part-time Academic Advisor (20 hours/week) in the College of Science. The role partners with students to plan degree progress, navigate requirements, and connect them with campus resources to support persistence and success.

The advisor will implement student-centered strategies, maintain records, and collaborate with faculty and staff to promote student development and retention across diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications

• MS, MA or M.Ed in Higher Education, Counselor Education, Career Counseling, Social Work, or related field.
• Excellent listening and interpersonal skills that exhibit positive regard, care, concern, and respect for students, families, and colleagues.
• Strong communication skills (written and in-person) with a broad audience including administrators, faculty, staff, students, and parents.
• Knowledge of research and theory related to college student development including cognitive/learning development, persistence, engagement, diversity, and applying to support student success.
• Thorough understanding of FERPA regulations within higher education.

Responsibilities

• Maintain systematic and frequent contact with advisees to provide information about academic progression and degree requirements, assess progress, and refer for concerns.
• Outreach to students to assist with planning and support.
• Direct students to campus resources that aid academic success (ASC, CRP, HEOP, Counseling Center, Disability Services, Financial Aid, etc.).
• Advise students to develop long-range goals and plans, including co-op/internships and study abroad opportunities.
• Assist students in evaluating progress toward goals and reviewing degree audits and transfer credits as needed.
• Participate in degree certification and stay updated on admissions requirements, programs, deadlines, and costs.
• Collaborate with chairs, deans’ delegates, faculty advisors, and university partners to provide seamless student support.
