Job summary

Lone Star College in Texas seeks a part-time EMS Skills Instructor to provide students with hands-on experience in a controlled laboratory environment and to assist in teaching course material. You will work up to 19 hours per week, with schedule consisting of days or evenings and occasional weekends, reporting to the EMSP Director and coordinating with faculty.

You will mentor EMSP students, liaise with clinical sites, and help with program documentation.

Qualifications

• Broad knowledge of EMS sciences and day-to-day operations.
• Ability to mentor students in the lab setting.
• Ability to work independently without close supervision.

Responsibilities

• Mentor and teach EMSP students while in the clinical environment.
• Act as a liaison between the clinical site staff and the student.
• Notify the EMSP Director of incidents in the clinical environment.
• Provide regular reports of student progress.
• Act as an ambassador of the EMSP program with the clinical site and students.
• Compile paperwork including time sheets and program evaluations.
• May also perform duties of classroom and laboratory skills instructor.
• Be responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned.

Job Description

Purpose and Scope: Part‑time EMS Skills Instructors work with Faculty/Instructors to provide students with hands‑on experience in a controlled laboratory environment. They assist Faculty/Instructors in providing learning activities and support that lead to the achievement of course objectives. The primary responsibility is to assist in teaching course material within the curriculum in a manner that facilitates student learning.

Skills Instructors are hired on an as‑needed basis and may not work more than 19 hours per week. Schedule may include days or evenings with occasional weekends as assigned, depending on the needs of the department.

Essential Job Functions

1. Mentor and teach EMSP students while in the clinical environment
2. Act as a liaison between the clinical site’s staff and the student
3. Notify the EMSP Director of incidents in the clinical environment
4. Provide regular reports of student progress
5. Act as an ambassador of the EMSP program with the clinical site and students
6. Compile paperwork as deemed necessary by the EMSP program, including time sheets, evaluation of clinical sites, program evaluations, and student evaluations
7. May also perform duties of classroom and laboratory skills instructor
8. Be responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Broad knowledge of EMS sciences, successfully handling day‑to‑day operations
• Must be able to perform and demonstrate all skills required to pass the EMS National Registry examination
• Ability to mentor students in the lab setting
• Ability to work independently without close supervision

Physical Abilities

• Required to lift and carry equipment up to 100 pounds, including lifting above the head
• Required to stand for long periods of time
• Must be able to:
  • Maintain concept of time and record seconds, minutes, and hours from a watch or clock
  • Read, write, converse, and comprehend fluent English
  • Listen to a person speak through a radio and respond audibly and intelligibly
  • Listen for breath sounds and blood pressure readings through a stethoscope
  • Walk and work in small spaces, various weather conditions, and various physical environments
  • Have the tactile and visual ability sufficient for physical assessment
  • Manipulate and handle equipment such as a stretcher from floor to a height of 80 inches

Work Schedule and Conditions

• Equipment includes PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and other general office equipment as well as all equipment generally used in EMS profession
• Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
• Work performed in a climate‑controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
• Work schedule varies and includes evenings and weekends

Required Qualifications

• Two years of EMS experience as a paramedic
• Current Texas State paramedic certification/license
• Current CPR certification must include adult, child, and infant CPR and obstructed airway for each age group; certification required within 90 days of starting

Salary

Hourly Pay Rate: $29.68
