Central Arizona College seeks a part-time laboratory support assistant to provide direct tutorial, training, and instructional lab support at Signal Peak Campus. The role involves directing work-study aides, preparing materials, and ensuring safety and compliance in the lab environment.

You will prepare media and supplies for classroom labs, supervise student workers, and assist with setup, maintenance, and testing of lab equipment. Evening/weekend work may be required.

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree or a combination of certification, education and experience to perform the essential functions.
  • Minimum of sixteen (16) credit hours of laboratory coursework in Biological and/or Physical sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Provide work direction to work-study student lab aides, including hands-on training and safety in a lab environment.
  • Train student workers on varying lab setups and processes.
  • Oversee laboratory student employees and organize assignment schedules.
  • Prepare instructional materials and setup lab equipment, chemicals, and supplies for experiments.
  • Prepare chemical and biological media, solutions, and assays used in classroom labs.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste per laws and regulations.
  • Provide orientation and training to faculty, staff, and students on lab equipment and safety procedures.
  • Test and validate student lab procedures to ensure learner success.
  • Participate in development of new labs and analyze lab results to fix issues.

Job description

Position is responsible for providing direct tutorial, training and/or instructional lab support to students and laboratory personnel in an open lab. Part-time positions are up to 19 hours per week located at Signal Peak Campus.

  • Provide work direction to work-study student lab aides to include hands‑on training ensuring working safely in a lab environment. Train student workers on varying processes of different lab set ups. Oversee laboratory student employees, including organizing and communicating student worker assignment schedules. Assist in the preparation of instructional materials to include preparation and setting up of lab equipment, chemicals, biological materials, and supplies necessary to conduct laboratory experiments.
  • Prepare chemical and biological media, solutions and assays used in classroom labs. Mix chemical solutions, culture microbes (some of mild pathogenicity), and assemble all supplies, including preserved dissectible specimens. Responsible for ensuring supply of the media used by students in the Microbiology labs.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposing of hazardous waste, as well as abiding by institutional, state, and federal laws with regard to waste disposal. Monitor the activities of students and staff in insure a safe learning environment.
  • Assist in the preparation of instructional materials to include setting up of lab equipment and supplies necessary to conduct laboratory assignments. Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained and may perform routine repair and maintenance.
  • Provide orientation and training to faculty, staff, and students in the use of the laboratory equipment, materials, waste receptacles, and supplies. Test out student lab procedures & protocols to ensure learner success in labs.
  • Participate in the development of new labs. Properly analyze lab results and interpret issues to fix classroom experiments when problems arise.
  • Perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position to include the recruitment and retention of students
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:

Associate Degreeor a Combination of certification, education and experience to perform the essential functions of the position.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of sixteen (16) credit hours of laboratory coursework in Biological and/or Physical sciences.

DEADLINE:

  • Knowledge of the concepts of customer service and calibration and problem solving.
  • Skill in the use of computer hardware and software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
PHYSICALREQUIREMENTS:

Duties requires occasional physical exertion, work with moderate to heavy (up to 50 lbs.) materials unassisted. Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting, and/or repetitive motion.

WORKINGCONDITIONS:

Job is performed in laboratory setting area with many and frequent distractions such as noise, interruptions, or congested work areas with exposure to some disagreeable elements. May require evening and weekend work schedules Occasionally may be exposed to chemical fumes and particulate matter. Occasionally may be exposed to hazardous chemicals and materials.
