Job summary

Fort Smith Public Schools is seeking an hourly School Resource Officer to provide security presence and support across district campuses in Fort Smith, Arkansas. This part-time, non-exempt role is up to 28 hours per week.

The SRO will rotate between schools, respond to incidents, document events, and testify when needed. A high school diploma or GED and certified law enforcement experience are required, with strong communication and de-escalation skills.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or college degree.
• Must have certified law enforcement experience.
• Must pass background checks for certified officers and school employees.
• Must meet CLEST standards.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Prior experience in a school environment or security is desirable.
• Ability to communicate with diverse groups under stress.
• Ability to write clear chronological reports.
• Ability to de-escalate critical situations.
• Ability to qualify and handle designated firearms.
• Tactical experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide security presence and assist staff to maintain order and safety.
• Ensure safety and welfare of students, staff, and visitors.
• Assist administrative staff with enforcing safe procedures at building level.
• Rotate between several schools as needed.
• Work after-hour events as assigned.
• Monitor buildings, entrances, halls, and facilities.
• Notify authorities of emergencies or unusual situations.
• Assist with student traffic flow during arrival and departure.
• Escort disruptive students to the appropriate office.
• Provide testimony in discipline appeals and court if required.
• Promote student responsibility and professional conduct.
• Assist with supervision of breakfast and lunch periods.
• Maintain confidentiality of records and information.
• Willingness to work flexible hours including overtime and weekends.
