Job summary

Norfolk Public School District is seeking a Part-Time School Nurse to deliver professional nursing care in a school setting. The role involves health assessments, medication administration, and coordinating health plans for students, including those with disabilities.

The position requires a Virginia nursing license (RN or LPN), CPR certification, a Virginia driver's license, and 1–3 years of experience. It offers limited benefits and a schedule of 6 hours per day up to 29 hours per week.

Qualifications

• Current Virginia nursing license (RN or LPN)
• CPR certification required
• Virginia driver’s license required
• BSN preferred
• Pediatric or medical/surgical nursing experience preferred
• 1–3 years’ experience required
• Experience in school setting preferred
• Experience with students with disabilities preferred
• Ability to interpret health services to stakeholders
• Knowledge of IEPs/504 plans is a plus
• Ability to work independently in a school clinic and make sound judgments
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups
• Ability to organize and present information clearly in writing and verbally
• Experience with data collection and reporting software

Responsibilities

• Provide professional nursing care in a school setting
• Perform nursing assessments and diagnoses for students
• Administer medications to students
• Provide skilled nursing for students with disabilities as needed
• Document student health interactions, medications, and concerns
• Provide emergency care during school hours
• Refer to parents and staff for intervention and follow-up
• Update parents on health status and emergencies
• Serve as nursing liaison to students, staff, administration, and parents
• Participate in IEP meetings and health plan development
• Contribute to health screenings per state guidelines
• Prepare reports for schools per DOE and district guidelines
• Distribute health information to students and families
• Meet standing, lifting, and mobility requirements including CPR
