Job description

The Part-Time Custodian / Kitchen Specialist supports the daily cleanliness, organization, and safe operation of the school building. This role helps ensure that classrooms, common areas, restrooms, and kitchen spaces remain clean, orderly, and welcoming for students and staff.

Depending on the daily needs of the school, responsibilities may include supporting kitchen operations such as preparing and delivering student meals, as well as maintaining high standards of cleanliness throughout the building. The ideal candidate is reliable, hardworking, and takes pride in maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organized environment for children and staff.

Key Responsibilities

Building Cleanliness and Custodial Support

• Maintain the overall cleanliness of the school building, including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, and common areas.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, wipe down surfaces, and remove trash throughout the building.
• Restock supplies such as paper towels, soap, and cleaning materials as needed.
• Support daily building reset and ensure spaces remain clean, safe, and welcoming for students and staff.

Kitchen Support (as needed)

• Assist in the preparation and plating of breakfast and lunch meals according to the school's menu and portion guidelines.
• Ensure meals are prepared and served in accordance with food safety standards.
• Transport meals to classrooms safely and on time.

Cleaning and Sanitization

• Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, dishes, utensils, and equipment.
• Follow sanitation procedures to maintain a hygienic environment and prevent cross-contamination.
• Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and food preparation areas throughout the shift.

Organization and Supplies

• Assist with organizing kitchen supplies, food inventory, and cleaning materials.
• Keep storage areas neat, labeled, and well maintained.
• Notify supervisors when supplies need to be replenished.

Breakfast Preparation Support

• Assist with basic preparation tasks for the following day's breakfast service, including portioning and labeling items when needed.

Safety and Compliance

• Follow all health, safety, and sanitation procedures required by the school and local authorities.
• Support a safe environment for students and staff by maintaining clean and hazard-free spaces.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous experience in custodial work, food service, or facility maintenance is helpful but not required.
• Strong attention to cleanliness, organization, and detail.
• Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks independently.
• Strong work ethic and reliability.
• Ability to work well as part of a team in a school environment.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry items up to 30 pounds.
• Standing, bending, walking, and moving throughout the building for extended periods.
• Ability to perform routine cleaning and facility support tasks.
• Comfort working in both kitchen and custodial environments.
