Job summary

The City of Fairhope is seeking a full-time Sanitation Support Assistant in the Public Works Department. Under supervision of the Sanitation Supervisor, you will assist with auditing garbage cans, evaluate routes, and support sanitation operations, including manual labor and equipment handling below Class B CDL level.

Hours are Monday–Friday, 7am–2pm. The role emphasizes logistical improvements, data collection, and adherence to safety rules in a locally focused municipal setting.

Responsibilities

  • Operational Support and Route Evaluation: assist with annual audit verification for residential and commercial customers and analyze routes for billing accuracy and efficiency.
  • Equipment Operation: operate light- to medium-duty vehicles and sanitation-related equipment not requiring a Class B CDL, transport refuse and recyclables, and follow daily task assignments.
  • Equipment Maintenance: perform daily safety inspections, assist with basic vehicle maintenance and report malfunctions.
  • Manual Labor and General Sanitation Duties: assist with physical labor related to sanitation and waste collection operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Operational Support and Route Evaluation.

  • Assists with the annual audit verification for both residential and commercial customers.
  • Supports route and account analysis for billing accuracy and efficiency.
  • Collects data, observes operations, and provides input on potential improvements.
  • Develops sanitation and recycling collection routes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Equipment Operation.

  • Operates light- to medium-duty vehicles and sanitation-related equipment that does not require a Class B CDL.
  • Transports and delivers refuse, recycling containers, and materials as directed.
  • Follows daily task assignments and maintains records of activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Equipment Maintenance.

  • Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections.
  • Fuels, cleans, and assists with preventative maintenance of vehicles.
  • Reports malfunctions and assists with minor repairs under supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Manual Labor and General Sanitation Duties.

  • Assists with physical labor related to sanitation and waste collection operations.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:

  • Assists with placing barricades and barriers for City special events.
  • Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Possess a current and valid driver’s license; must be insurable.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours.
  • Ability to travel throughout City to perform job functions.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.

  • Ability remain alert when operating vehicles and equipment.

  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.

Physical Demands

The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas.

Work Environment

The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at great heights under extreme weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
