The Environmental Science Institute at UT Austin seeks a Research Engineering/Scientist Associate II to support community based participatory research projects that partner geoscience researchers, Austin community members, and other stakeholders. Project CRESSLE partners UT researchers with Austin community members to develop community resilience projects across four research themes (water, climate, air quality, and land use).
ESI facilitates interdisciplinary initiatives to address challenges to resilience in the face of projected rapid urbanization, population growth, climate change, and other environmental changes in the 21st century.
This is a benefits eligible salaried position at 20 hours per week.
Purpose
To support community based participatory research projects that partner geoscience researchers, Austin community members, and other stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Work with university researchers (faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students) and community members to collect data for survey research, and community-based participatory research (CBPR) projects
- Conducting research using scientific and public databases, applying data analytic techniques, mapping data using GIS
- Writing reports and presenting results at regular meetings and professional society meetings
- Provide support to CRESSLE Program Manager in engaging communities and external stakeholders around CBPR projects, and Project CRESSLE results and dissemination
Required Qualifications
- Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Environmental Sciences (or related science field) and 2 years relevant experience
- Self-motivated and strong problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications
- Research skills and interests in analyzing data from various sources (remote sensing, model output, databases, linked to climate and hydrology)
- Familiarity with one or more programming languages and machine learning toolkits
- Experience working with communities (community members, non-profits, other stakeholders) around community resilience issues related to any of the CRESSLE research themes (water, climate, air quality and land use)
Salary Range
$30,000 + depending on qualifications prorated ($60,000 annual)

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
