Job description

St. James Parish is hiring a Part-Time Recreational Park Custodian under the Operations Department.

JOB FUNCTION: To perform routine manual tasks in maintaining the cleanliness, sanitary conditions, and appearance of St. James Parish Recreational Parks. This is a part-time, non-exempt position, 20 hours per week. The employee may be required to work weekends to open and close recreational parks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes any combination of the following illustrative examples of duties and responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  1. Cleans bathrooms and other assigned areas by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and polishing.
  2. Empties and decontaminates trash containers.
  3. Sweeps sidewalks, porches, and tiled surfaces.
  4. Picks up, collects, and disposes of trash, garbage, litter, and debris.
  5. Unlocks and locks facilities before and after events.
  6. Notifies Recreation Administrator of maintenance needs for buildings or park equipment.
  7. Requisitions cleaning supplies.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience and/or training.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, and divide in all units of measurement using whole numbers.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: None required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of operating procedures and maintenance of equipment.
  • General knowledge of hazards and safety regulations related to equipment operation.
  • Ability to perform physical labor.
  • Ability to identify operating problems of equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands include sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects, climbing, balancing, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Must occasionally lift/move up to 30 pounds. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee works outdoors in various weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, exposed to vibration, fumes, airborne particles, and sometimes in high places. The noise level is usually very loud.
