An established industry player is looking for passionate Recreation Leaders to join their Community Services Department. The City of Anaheim Community Services Department is seeking Recreation Leader II’s. This is a part-time position averaging 20 hours per week, however, no minimum number of hours is guaranteed. Hours may include weekends, evenings, and some holidays.
One (1) year of experience performing duties comparable to a Recreation Leader I is required. Recreation Leader I is the entry-level class in the Recreation Leader Series. This position, Recreation Leader II, is the second level of the Recreation Leader Series.
The following locations currently have vacancies for Recreation Leader II:
Active Older Adult Programs – Staff assigned to this position provide support to the programs and services available to seniors at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, Brookhurst Community Center, East Anaheim Community Center, Miraloma Family Resource Center, Ponderosa Family Resource Center, Downtown Anaheim Youth Center, West Anaheim Youth Center and the East Anaheim Gymnasium. Some of the key responsibilities of this position include providing customer service in person and by phone, assisting with the coordination and implementation of programs and special events, ensuring proper and safe room set-ups for scheduled programming, providing program and service information to seniors and assisting with program registration. Ideal candidates have an outgoing personality and enjoy interacting with seniors. Must be available to work at varied locations Monday through Sunday. Typical program hours are between 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., but may vary for special events and seasonal programming.
Adult Sports Scorekeeping - Staff will be responsible for Adult Basketball and Flag Football League score keeping which includes running the scoreboard and keeping individual player stats. Staff duties will also include customer service, team engagement, and enforcement of league rules to ensure each player has a positive experience. Adult Basketball program takes place on Sunday afternoons and evenings and Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Adult Flag Football program takes place on Tuesday evenings. Experience and interest in these sports is highly desired.
CampVenture – During the summer, this position will lead a group of camp participants through activities such as outdoor sports, games, and crafts. This ten-week program for ages 6-12 runs Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. from June 9 - August 15. During the remainder of the year, if available, this position will assist with afterschool programming Monday-Friday 3 p.m.-6 p.m. Experience working with children, creative, energetic and engaging personalities are highly desired.
East Anaheim Gym Youth Sports Coaching - Staff will be responsible for coaching youth basketball and/or volleyball during the various camps, clinics, and leagues offered throughout the year. Experience working with children, playing sports, positive attitudes, and great energy are highly desired.
Family Resource Centers - Staff will provide support to the daily operations of our local Family Resource Center, and interact regularly with youth, families, and senior patrons utilizing our programs and services. Typical duties of this position include assisting customers at the front desk and by telephone, ensuring proper and safe room set-ups for facility user groups, monitoring facility use, and providing support to the implementation of Human Services programs, services, and special events. Must be available to work at varied locations Monday through Sunday between the operational hours of 8:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m., but may vary depending on special events and private rentals.
Oak Canyon Nature Center – During the summer, this position will plan and lead a station focused on art, games, nature or traditions for camp participants. This is a nine-week program for ages 5-12, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. from mid-June to mid-August. During the remainder of the year, this position will lead hikes, assist with trail maintenance, nature programs, and facility rentals. Camp experience, experience working with children, and knowledge of nature and wildlife is desirable.
Ponderosa Park Family Resource Center Gymnasium – Under moderate supervision, plan, assist and lead a variety of youth recreation programs, sports camps, clinics, and leagues, including officiating youth sports games. Additional job responsibilities may include assisting customers at the front desk and by phone, ensuring proper and safe room set-ups for facility user groups, and providing support to the implementation of other Family Resource Center programs, special events, and private rentals. The typical schedule for this position is Monday through Friday between 1:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m., but may vary as needed for special events.
Tiny Tots Academy - Staff will lead a group of program participants by following the daily curriculum and work alongside team members to maintain a positive and supportive classroom environment through hands-on and play-based learning. The Tiny Tots Academy is for children ages 3-5 and aims to strengthen our program participants' socialization skills and kindergarten readiness. Staff collaborate on programming needs including curriculum development, behavior management, and overall program improvement. Staff must be available from 8:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Ideal candidates have experience working with toddlers, and creative, energetic, and engaging personalities are highly desirable.
Wilderness Survival - This position will plan and lead the Wilderness Survival Camp during the summer, which teaches outdoor safety and survival strategies. This is a four-week program for ages 12-15, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. from mid-June to mid-August. During the remainder of the year, this position will lead hikes and assist with trail maintenance, nature programs, and facility rentals. Camp and outdoor education experience, experience working with children, and knowledge of nature and wildlife are desirable.
Youth Programs – Staff will lead, plan and actively participate in program activities for after school and mobile recreation programs including: STARS, Fun on Wheels, and Ramp N’ Roll. Staff must be available to work at varied park locations throughout Anaheim from 2:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Ideal candidates are active, outgoing, have the ability to help with homework and experience working with children is required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the full journey-level class in the Recreation Leader series. This position requires a specific knowledge of and interest in sports, arts and crafts, education, leisure activities for youth and/or adults, and/or community center and facility maintenance and operations. This class is distinguished from the Program Specialist in that the latter is responsible for all program planning, staff supervision, and administration for a particular recreational program area. An employee may be promoted from Recreation Leader I to Recreation Leader II without qualifying through the competitive process. Placement within the series is subject to department needs and an incumbent’s qualifications.
