Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Patrol and secure assigned areas on foot or by vehicle to deter and report unauthorized activity.
• Direct traffic and provide parking guidance for events and details.
• Provide information to faculty, staff, and visitors of Stetson University; escort community members as needed.
• Maintain Lost and Found; check for safety hazards; monitor alarms.
• Lock/unlock facilities as requested; respond to alarms and coordinate with Fire/Police as needed.
• Prepare reports, issue traffic citations, and assist in disaster/emergency management; relieve dispatcher when required.
• Perform minor building maintenance tasks and basic repairs as needed.
• Perform other position-related duties as assigned.

Part Time/On-Call Position:

Selected officers will cover a variety of shifts when officers are on vacation, sick, or training as well as provide coverage for University events.

Under the general oversight of the assigned shift Sergeant, the Public Safety Officer performs routine policy enforcement and security work in the protection of people and in the safeguarding of university property. The officer secures assigned property against possible loss or damage and is charged with ensuring the safety of all individuals on campus. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports for compliance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines. Performs other work as requested.

There are currently Day & Night Shift positions available.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

Employment duties include, but are not limited to:

• Patrol/make rounds of the assigned area by foot or vehicle; watch for unauthorized persons or activities; report unusual instances to shift Sergeant; call police for assistance if necessary
• Assist with traffic directions and parking for special details
• Provide University information to Stetson faculty, staff, and visitors
• Escort Stetson community members to and from buildings and parking lots as needed
• Maintain lost and found services
• Check for safety, fire, and/or security hazards
• Monitor fire and security alarms
• Lock and unlock facilities as requested by an authorized person(s)
• Prepare reports; issue traffic citations; provide disaster and emergency evaluation and management; relieve dispatcher when necessary
• Perform some minor building maintenance tasks, i.e., securing broken windows, turning off water, and resetting 110-volt electric circuit breakers
• Respond to various types of building and equipment alarms, coordinating with the local Fire and Police Departments as they respond
• Perform similar and other position-related work as requested

Required Qualifications:

This position requires:

• High school diploma or GED
• Three (3) years of security experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• Must possess a “Class D” security license with the State of Florida or be willing to pursue and secure such certification (State of Florida Chapter 493)
• Per our Tobacco Use policy (see the full policy here), all University property have been designated tobacco/smoke-free. This Policy applies twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the University’s auto insurance carrier.

Work Environment:

Duties require both indoor and outdoor work; direct exposure to prevailing weather, extreme heat, humidity, and extreme cold; physical ability to endure standing and/or walking for long periods, stair climbing, bending, stooping, manual dexterity; lifting of up to fifty pounds; and perceptual demands for sound, form, depth.

Work authorization sponsorship may be available for this position. However, sponsorship is contingent upon the non-applicability of the visa petition fees outlined in the relevant Executive Order signed September 19, 2025. Due to the recent federally-mandated increased financial expense, the university is not in a position to absorb this significantly increased cost of sponsorship for new H-1B petitions at this time.
