Job Opening: Part-Time Professional Staff Nurse at UPMC Passavant

ANCC Magnet Recognized UPMC Passavant is hiring a Part-Time Professional Staff Nurse to support the PACU/APS Department at the McCandless Location. Prior experience in a Critical Care or Emergency Department setting is required. Candidates with PACU or Peri-Op experience are strongly preferred. Title and salary are based on education and experience.

Department Overview

The Peri-anesthesia Unit comprises three departments: Preop, PACU, and Phase 2. Preop involves admitting patients for surgery and assessing their health status. PACU focuses on recovering patients from anesthesia, emphasizing airway management. Phase 2 ensures patient safety for discharge, providing instructions and education.

Schedule Options

• Part-time staff work two 12-hour or two 10-hour shifts weekly.
• Preop shifts start at 5 a.m.
• PACU/Phase 2 shifts start at 7:30 a.m., staggered until 9:30 a.m. (12-hour) or 11:30 a.m. (10-hour).

Call Requirements

• Weekday calls follow the latest shift (0930/1130 start), from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
• Weekend calls (Saturday or Sunday): 12-hour shifts, 6 a.m.–6 p.m. or 6 p.m.–6 a.m., sign-up required.
• One holiday call shift per year (6 a.m.–6 p.m. or 6 p.m.–6 a.m.).
• Expect 2–3 call shifts per 6-week schedule.

Responsibilities

• Participate in quality improvement efforts, identify opportunities, and support patient satisfaction and safety initiatives.
• Apply the nursing process within Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment, formulate goals, and develop holistic care plans.
• Maintain effective communication, comprehensive documentation, and build caring relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
• Demonstrate accountability for professional growth, participate in shared governance, and support practice improvements.
• Teach patients, families, and staff using adult learning principles, providing detailed guidance and mentorship as needed.
