The Police Service Aide assists and/or relieves sworn personnel of a variety of routine tasks that do not require the authority of a sworn law enforcement officer. This is a civilian position within the Police Department with no arrest powers. Typical duties include handling traffic-related assignments, working in the call center, and preparing reports and/or documentation. PSA may also assist in the Emergency Command Center, Records, Dispatch, Animal Shelter, and may operate a department motor vehicle as necessary for assigned tasks.

A Day in the Life:

  • Accepts responsibility to support and promote the agency's mission and core values. Maintains, applies knowledge of, and follows departmental policies, procedures, law and regulations.
  • Works in the Police Department command center performing tasks such as answering and fielding phone calls, fingerprinting, and taking in-person and over-the-counter police reports. Fully and accurately completes and routes electronic offense reports, written narratives, correspondence and other documents in a clear, concise and understandable manner.
  • Provides factual courtroom testimony in a well-prepared, clear, concise and complete manner.
  • Serves and delivers subpoenas and other official papers promptly and accurately in accordance with applicable laws, ordinances, and department policies.
  • Assists the Police Records division in clerical and data entry functions to include scanning and entering documents, transferring case card information to Excel spreadsheets, converting old case jackets into the current records management system (RMS) and performing NCIC validations.
  • Responds to calls for service not requiring a sworn police officer, as assigned and in accordance with department policy.
  • Provides funeral escorts, traffic control for parades and supportive services at community events, and directs traffic at accident scenes and during special events.
  • Performs park security patrol; Monitors all areas of multiple City park properties to deter and mitigate crime; Completes park sweeps at closing time to ensure all park visitors have exited the properties; Observes and reports suspicious and/or illegal activity; Conducts site inspections (building security and locks, lights, alarms, cameras, etc.); Maintains radio communications and requests back-up as the need arises; Provides customer service responding to park-goer inquiries.
  • Assists the Hutchinson Animal Shelter staff with general office duties such answering and fielding phone calls, basic data entry, and scanning/digitizing paper records; Performs general cleaning of the shelter facility, kennels, floors, dishes, toys, and crates; Walks dogs, provides animal enrichment in the play yards, and assists with animal photos.
  • Performs general duties to assist with patrol car care such as cleaning, restocking, and fueling; Runs general errands as assigned.

What You Will Need to be Successful:

Education: A high school diploma or GED is required. Preference will be given to those pursuing post-secondary education in Criminal Justice, Police Science, etc.

Experience: No prior experience required. Candidates will receive departmental training needed to complete assigned tasks.

General: Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Must be 18 years of age at the time of hire. Must be a US Citizen. May not have any felony convictions or expunged convictions, and has not been placed on diversion for a felony offense, or misdemeanor or crime of domestic violence or its equivalent under the uniform code of military justice.
