The Juilliard School in New York City is seeking a part-time piano technician to tune and service pianos across practice rooms, studios, classrooms, and venues. Hours are 6:00 am to 10:00 am, five days a week, with occasional evenings and weekends as assigned, reporting to the Chief Piano Technician.

The role involves maintaining 270+ pianos on campus, supporting performances, and ensuring instruments are in peak condition for departments in Music, Dance, and Drama.

Qualifications

  • High school or equivalent required.
  • 3 years of experience as piano technician.
  • Strong tuning and action regulation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with computer applications including Excel.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Description:

A part-time (20 hrs/week), fixed schedule piano technician is expected to tune and service pianos in practice rooms, studios, classrooms, rehearsal rooms, and venues. Work hours are6:00 am to 10:00 am, 5 days a week. Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends as assigned by supervisor. Reports to Chief Piano Technician.

The salary range for this role is $32.00-36.00 per hour.

About the Department:

Piano Maintenance is in charge of tuning, regulating, repairing, moving, and rebuilding 270+ acoustic pianos in Diamond and Rose buildings on Juilliard’s Lincoln Center campus in New York City. We serve vibrant communities in Music, Dance, and Drama departments, and prep pianos for over 1,000 performances in our college and pre-college divisions. Served by six full-time piano technicians, Piano Maintenance keeps Juilliard pianos at highest levels of performance year around.

Minimum Requirements:
  • High school or equivalent
  • 3 years of experience as piano technician
  • Strong piano tuning and action regulation skills
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Commitment to collaborating as a supportive team player
  • Demonstrated initiative, with the ability to set goals and achieve results
  • Commitment to continuous learning and the ongoing development of technical skills
  • Openness to new ideas, methods, and approaches
  • Willing to work flexible hours and weekends if needed
Preferred Background:
  • Previous experience working in a university or conservatory setting
  • Piano Technicians Guild RPT status preferred
  • Training at a piano manufacturer or rebuilding shop
  • Attendance at PTG meetings, classes, and conferences
  • Graduate of recognized training program
  • College degree
