Position Title: Peer Advocate (Part-Time)

Location: 384 E. 149th Street, Bronx

Reports To: Director of Peer Services

Cost Center: 54010

General Purpose: The Peer Advocacy Leadership (PAL) program is a consumer-led mental health initiative.

The PAL program provides peer supports to individuals diagnosed with mental illness to promote independence and community connection.

Peer staff teach self-advocacy and how to access community resources. They provide direct services, including skills training and peer counseling, aiming for wellness and community integration. Services are delivered in office, community, and partner settings.

Essential Functions: Core responsibilities include:

  1. Providing advocacy, support, and bridging services focused on wellness and resiliency to improve quality of life.
  2. Inspiring hope for recovery.
  3. Advocating for participants aligned with their personal choices.
  4. Explaining available services and programs related to participants' goals.
  5. Facilitating self-help groups and wellness services to address health needs, develop coping strategies, and connect with resources like housing, education, and employment.
  6. Recording and documenting services as required by regulations.
  7. Sharing personal recovery stories to support participants and reduce stigma.
  8. Modeling recovery and coping skills.
  9. Connecting individuals to the community, facilitating a transition from professional to peer support.
  10. Educating about self-help techniques and group processes.
  11. Adhering to departmental policies and procedures.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Lived experience with mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders.
  • NYS Peer Certification or certification with the Academy of Peer Services.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and electronic health records.
  • Excellent communication and written skills.
  • Preferred: Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Preferred: Over one year of experience in human services.
