UPMC St. Margaret is currently hiring a part-time Patient Care Technician to assist our 6A Surgical Unit. This position will work rotating 8 and 12-hour shifts with holiday and weekend requirements.
The Patient Care Technician is a valued step in the UPMC Patient Care Support Career Ladder. The final candidate will be placed in the appropriate title and salary based on experience and education.
Responsibilities:
- Support departmental changes, assume responsibility for assignments, and view problems as challenges.
- Demonstrate awareness of behavior impacts on department functioning and support quality initiatives.
- Receive feedback constructively, identify learning needs, and participate in self-review and projects.
- Adhere to policies and procedures, perform timely work, transport patients, and perform clinical tasks like catheter insertions and dressings as instructed.
- Perform nursing assistant responsibilities, provide patient care, assist with therapies, and report patient status changes.
- Ensure equipment reports and effective communication with departments, maintain professional relationships, and contribute to unit activities.
- Communicate effectively, understand cultural diversity, support safety, and develop productive relationships.
- Perform core nursing assistant duties, including ADLs, point of care testing, and specimen collection, achieving all competencies.
- Assist with therapies, provide patient instruction, and report changes to RN.
- Report equipment issues, communicate across departments, and participate in unit activities.
- Perform in accordance with system competencies and other duties as assigned.
- Achieve and maintain competency in advanced skills like arrhythmia, wound care, EKGs, and NG tubes based on department needs.
Patient Care Technician Senior Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Either 2 years healthcare experience and meet PCT requirements, or 1 year experience with enrollment in PT/OT/PA program, or a bachelor's in health sciences.
- Complete professional contributions annually, pass senior class, and basic information system training.
- Preferred: Microcomputer experience, effective communication, EMT or Paramedic enrollment, and basic arrhythmia course.
Licensure and Certifications:
- CPR (AHA standards) within 30 days of hire; ACLS preferred.
- Act 34 clearance with renewal.
