Under direction of the Superintendent of Parks/Forestry, actively participate in skilled and semi-skilled labor, engage in the construction, renovation, fabrication, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreation facilities, grounds, equipment, and amenities in all areas assigned to the Parks and Recreation Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs normal parks maintenance labor functions, including but not limited to grounds maintenance, landscape construction, snow removal, construction, and facility repair.
  • Safely operates all vehicles and equipment used in the maintenance of the park grounds, facilities, and open spaces.
  • Assists in horticulture and arboricultural practices in the parks, open spaces, and other city facilities.
  • Applies herbicides, pesticides, and chemicals as required.
  • Assists in training seasonal employees in work methods, use of tools, equipment, and safety practices.
  • Assists with special events as needed.
  • Participates in related training programs.
  • Assists the Forestry Division when needed.
  • Receives, responds, or refers to supervisor, questions, and concerns from patrons; identifies issues and resolves problems in a timely manner maintaining a customer service philosophy that is responsive and positive.
  • Wear all required personal protection equipment and visually assess involvement in situations to assure personal safety.
  • Regular and punctual attendance.
  • Represents the City in a professional, responsible, and trustworthy manner; promotes and supports City programs, policies, and activities within job duties and with the public.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic landscape construction.
  • Basic building construction and carpentry techniques.
  • Basic horticulture and arboricultural practices.
  • Results-oriented, detail-oriented and possess good time management skills to handle a variety of assignments and deadlines.
  • Customer service oriented.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with members of the public, peers, employees, and supervisors in oral and written form.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees, and the general public.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Operate motor vehicles including large trucks, mowers, and tractors.
  • Operate hand-held power tools.
  • High school diploma/GED and valid Driver’s License required.
  • Must possess current Iowa Commercial Ornamental and Turf and Right of Way Pesticide License or ability to obtain same within 120 days of employment.
  • Experience in or understanding of grounds maintenance, landscape construction, and turf management.
  • Experience in or understanding of horticulture and arboricultural practices.
  • Experience in or understanding of integrated pest management and herbicide/pesticide applications.
  • Experience in or understanding of building construction and carpentry.
  • Occupational hazards and related safety precautions.
  • Prior Parks work experience preferred or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation and physical.
  • Must live within 15 air miles of the Burlington City limits.
