Job summary

The Virginia Zoo, located in Norfolk, Virginia, is seeking a part-time Account Clerk to handle daily deposits, record payments, and support monthly closings. The role requires 1-3 years of cash handling or accounting support and proficiency in Excel.

You will work in a nonprofit environment, using accounting software to manage revenue, invoices, and reporting, while ensuring accuracy and internal controls. This position is 16–20 hours per week, primarily on-site in Norfolk.

Qualifications

• High school diploma; some accounting coursework preferred.
• 1-3 years of cash handling or accounting support experience.
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Experience using accounting software applications.
• GAAP knowledge preferred; nonprofit experience is a plus.
• Background check clearance may be required.

Responsibilities

• Process daily deposit transactions (cash, check, credit card).
• Prepare cash deposits for bank pickup.
• Deposit checks received directly to bank using check scanner.
• Record payments deposited directly into the bank and maintain accurate documentation in financial software.
• Process Ticketure payments, record revenue, and prepare invoices for the City of Norfolk.
• Pull donation reports, verify deposits, review fee reports, and record receivables.
• Create and record sponsor invoices.
• Calculate sales tax and allocate revenue between VZS and vendors.
• Collect funds from donation boxes and machines, including FE NXT recording.
• Run daily conservation roundup reports and update tracking system.
• Manage customer chargebacks for credit card transactions.
• Support monthly closing activities with Accountant and Director of Finance.
• Expand knowledge to respond to growing department needs.
