Job summary

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking a part-time Academic Hourly Laboratory Technician for the Wildlife Epidemiology Laboratory in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Responsibilities include molecular assay setup (PCR/qPCR), DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing prep, plasmid development, spectrophotometry, and assay calibration.

The role emphasizes experience with molecular diagnostics, maintaining QA/QC, and supporting diagnostic tests in a collaborative lab

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology or a related field.
• Familiarity with techniques in molecular diagnostics.
• Experience in a laboratory diagnostics setting is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform DNA/RNA extractions of submissions to VDL in Wildlife Epidemiology Lab.
• Perform conventional and quantitative PCRs following established SOPs.
• Analyze DNA/RNA extracts for quality and quantity using spectrophotometry.
• Develop and validate new techniques or modify existing techniques for use in diagnostic tests in VDL.
• Develop PCR-based plasmid positive controls and develop skills for cell culture that support disease diagnosis.
• Maintain clean and tidy workspace and assist in washing, preparation, and sterilization of glassware.
• Maintain log of diagnostic samples and reporting of test results; manage inventory of supplies.
• Assist in QA/QC requirements implementation.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
