Purpose

This position delivers exceptional patient service by performing duties entailing preparation of tissue specimens for routine and special procedures to assist in confirming a diagnosis provided by the pathologist.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist with receipt of specimens and accessioning paraffin cases
  • Assist with printing cassettes, slides, and slide labels
  • Assist with filing slides and pulling slides related to prior cases
  • Perform quality assurance checks
  • Verify slide and block match for each case
  • Compile cases and ensure slides are matched with patient requisition information
  • Ensure stat cases are seen by the pathologist with urgency, as soon as available
  • Examine and prepare histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and patient diagnosis
  • File blocks and slides appropriately
  • Log cases in the biopsy book
  • Understand slide stainer, staining cycles, and be able to load/unload the slide stainer
  • Operate computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate tissue specimens with wax for preservation
  • Prepare slides of specimens using specified stains to enhance visibility under the microscope
  • Examine slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory standards
  • Submit outside materials for review as needed
  • Perform histochemistry and immunohistochemistry studies as required
  • Manage unexpected lab situations, such as instrument problems or health issues affecting test results
  • Operate and maintain tissue processing, embedding, and sectioning instruments
  • Perform recuts and additional stains, including special and IHC stains, as requested by the pathologist
  • Maintain QC/QA records
  • Maintain documentation per CLIA guidelines
  • Monitor inventory levels, order supplies, and keep logs of supplies
  • Perform other duties incidental to the work described

Skills And Qualifications

  • Knowledge of lab design and operation
  • Minimum of two years of lab experience preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to demonstrate independent judgment and initiative
  • Ability to stand and walk for 8 hours per day
  • Proficiency in computer operation (40 WPM minimum) and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to document patient records accurately
  • Full range of body motion and ability to lift up to 20 pounds
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
  • Normal hearing and eyesight, including near, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception
