Responsibilities

  • Document Patient Encounters – Accurately record patient history, physical exams, diagnoses, treatments, procedures, and other relevant clinical information in the electronic health record (EHR) system; capture provider verbal instructions and patient interactions.
  • Assist in Patient Flow – Coordinate with medical staff for timely patient flow; prepare for exams by obtaining necessary medical records or lab results.
  • Support Providers – Enter orders, prescriptions, and follow‑up care instructions; ensure all documentation meets legal, regulatory, and organizational standards.
  • Maintain Confidentiality – Adhere to HIPAA and patient confidentiality laws while handling sensitive medical information.
  • Prepare for Medical Procedures – Document procedures, treatments, and other interventions accurately as per provider instructions.
  • Communication – Communicate with medical staff, patients, and other departments to facilitate smooth patient care delivery.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Summary

A Medical Scribe is responsible for assisting healthcare providers by documenting patient encounters in real-time during medical examinations, ensuring accurate and thorough documentation in the patient’s medical record. The primary goal is to increase the efficiency of healthcare professionals by allowing them to focus on patient care while the scribe handles documentation and other administrative tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Document Patient Encounters – Accurately record patient history, physical exams, diagnoses, treatments, procedures, and other relevant clinical information in the electronic health record (EHR) system; capture provider verbal instructions and patient interactions.
  • Assist in Patient Flow – Coordinate with medical staff for timely patient flow; prepare for exams by obtaining necessary medical records or lab results.

Qualification Requirements
  • Previous experience as a medical scribe, medical assistant, or in a healthcare setting is preferred but not required.

Education and/or Experience
  • BA/BS degree required.
  • Positions may require a degree or certification in healthcare‑related fields such as Health Information Technology or Medical Assisting, or pursuit of an advanced degree (MD, DO, PA, NP).
Language and Mathematical Skills

Ability to read and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations; ability to write reports, business correspondence, treatment notes, and related documents; ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and the public. Mathematical proficiency in basic statistics and interpretation of data visualizations.

Certificates, License, Registration

Certification in Medical Scribing is preferred but not required.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to talk or hear; stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Generally pleasant office conditions. May occasionally travel to locations outside the county for training or meetings, exposing the employee to various weather conditions.

OSHA Category

Duties involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, but the employee may be required to perform unplanned Category I procedures. All Category I employees are offered the Engerix Hepatitis B vaccination series.
