Job summary

Project Oceanology seeks a part-time Maritime Field Research Technician to support L-TRAP operations from Groton, CT. You will assist with field data collection, deployment and retrieval of grappling gear, and handling of recovered traps aboard vessels.

This role requires physical effort and strict safety protocol adherence. As part of the L-TRAP field team, you contribute to a collaborative research and conservation effort with flexible scheduling based on vessel availability and weather.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Previous experience working aboard boats is preferred.
  • Experience in marine field research or related work is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Long Island Sound species, habitats, and fisheries is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field research and assist with data collection aboard vessels on Long Island Sound.
  • Assist deployment and retrieval of grappling equipment to locate and recover traps.
  • Haul recovered traps and gear aboard the vessel and document items.
  • Collect, record, and process field observations and gear information per L-TRAP protocols.
  • Maintain organized work areas and assist with equipment preparation and cleaning.
