Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance including backwashing, filter cleaning, vacuuming, and pool chemical checks.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical or chemical issues related to pool operations.
  • Repair or replace pool equipment including pumps, slide features, lane lines, and splash pad systems.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records (written and electronic).
  • Monitor and maintain pool chemical inventory and equipment; coordinate resupply with the Recreation Supervisor.
  • Transport supplies, deck furniture, and small equipment between aquatic facilities.
  • Assist with pool setup for events or public activities, including occasional weekends.
  • Operate a City vehicle for tasks such as supply pickups and deliveries.

Job description

The City of San Marcos Public Works Department welcomes qualified applications for the position of part-time Maintenance Worker - Aquatics!

This position supports the daily maintenance and operation of the Woodland Park Pool and Cerro de Las Posas Park Pool. The Maintenance Worker will perform routine preventative maintenance, basic repairs, and troubleshooting of mechanical and chemical pool issues. This is a great opportunity for someone with aquatics facility experience who is mechanically inclined, enjoys hands‑on work, and can work independently. Experience with aquatic filtration systems, Beck controllers, and pool chemistry is highly desirable.

Schedule: 15-20 hours per week, including a mandatory 4-hour Saturday morning shift.

Part‑time positions with the City of San Marcos are limited to an average of 20 hours per week and no more than 999 hours within the fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Hours are scheduled based on department need and budget approval. This position will be scheduled to work 15-20 hours per week, which may include nights and weekends depending on the special event schedule.

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:
Basic pool chemistry, electrical, plumbing, and construction repairs; methods, techniques, and skills in the use of tools and equipment used in day‑to‑day maintenance activities; and safety precautions necessary in working with chemicals and basic power tools.
Ability to:

  • Lift and carry up to 90 lbs
  • Work in confined or mechanical areas (e.g., pump rooms)
  • Maintain focus and productivity without direct supervision
  • Communicate clearly with pool staff, supervisors, and the public
  • Interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and safety protocols

One (1) year of responsible maintenance experience is desirable. Experience involving aquatic facilities, pool systems, mechanical equipment, plumbing, electrical systems, or similar maintenance work is highly desirable.

License or Certificate

Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license, Class C, with satisfactory driving record.

Possession of a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification, or ability to obtain certification within three (3) months of hire.
