Job summary

Jackson County is seeking a Maintenance Worker to perform cleaning and light maintenance across county buildings, including the Animal Shelter, Courthouse, Jail and offices. This role follows established schedules and may require evenings, holidays and some weekends.

Responsibilities include floor care, window cleaning, minor plumbing/electrical repairs, snow removal, mowing, and routine HVAC maintenance. Strong safety awareness and ability to lift up to 100 pounds are essential.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of general maintenance and cleaning procedures.
  • Ability to operate floor care and lawn equipment safely.
  • Ability to perform basic plumbing and electrical repairs.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions in English.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds and work in varied weather.

Responsibilities

  • Scrubs, mops, waxes, polishes and vacuums floors and carpets.
  • Clean walls, windows, fixtures and restrooms with appropriate cleaners.
  • Paints rooms and trims; performs basic repairs as needed.
  • Maintain grounds: mow, trim, water vegetation.
  • Perform snow removal and apply de-icers as needed.
  • Assist with HVAC maintenance and minor plumbing/electrical repairs.
  • Support security drills and remodeling projects as assigned.

Job description

Maintenance Worker performs a variety of building and grounds cleaning and/or maintenance/repair duties at the following buildings: Animal Shelter, Jackson County Courthouse, Jackson County Jail, Department of Health and Human Services, 11th Street buildings, Forestry and Parks office building, Pine View Road Group Home and other County buildings as required. Performs work according to established routines/schedules set by Maintenance Supervisor. Maintenance Worker works various shifts throughout the week which includes evenings, holidays some weekends.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Scrubs, mops, waxes, polishes and vacuums floors and carpets, using floor scrubber and polisher, carpet shampooer and vacuum cleaners following manufacturer’s instructions
  • Cleans walls, windows, fixtures, drinking fountains, lavatories and other facilities using appropriate cleaning agents and materials
  • Paints rooms, hallways and ceilings in various buildings using ladders in which heights may vary
  • Dusts, polishes furniture and washes windows
  • Uses cleaning agents according to MSDS instructions
  • Collects and disposes of refuse/recycling materials
  • Mows lawns. Trims and waters grass, shrubbery and plants
  • Performs snow removal using a variety of equipment including shovels, snow blowers, plow truck, ATV and/or skid steer. Salts walkways, steps and driveways
  • Performs routine maintenance and minor repair on HVAC equipment
  • Performs minor plumbing and electrical repair
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair on/in buildings
  • Performs maintenance and minor repair on vehicles, power equipment, vacuum cleaners and other equipment
  • Performs all monthly system tests including fire alarm, fire extinguisher and panic alarm
  • Assists with security drills
  • Assists with various remodeling projects
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge Skills And Abilities Required To Perform Job
  • Knowledge of general maintenance and cleaning procedures and supplies
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment and routine building and equipment maintenance
  • Skills and ability to use equipment essential to the position (not all inclusive – list serves as example only): floor scrubber, polisher, carpet shampooer, vacuum cleaner, riding lawnmower, push lawnmower, weed eater, snow removal equipment, basic hand tools, mops, brooms, shovel, basic repair tools, skill saw, drill and sawzall
  • Ability to make ordinary plumbing repairs or trouble shooting maintenance situations such as unplugging stools and sinks and replacing faucets, valves and seals
  • Ability to make ordinary electric repairs; changing light bulbs, ballasts, outlets, electrical switches
  • Ability to lubricate equipment
  • Ability to be exposed to the following working conditions: frequently required to walk, stand, crawl, talk, hear, stop, kneel, crouch or smell
  • Ability to be exposed to weather temperature conditions from severe heat to severe cold
  • Ability to climb ladders and work with heights of many ranges
  • Ability to perform duties needed during work in high stress situations (ie. during fire alarm or security alarm activation)
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, and laws in the English language
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas in spoken and written format so individuals may effectively understand and convey communications
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Inductive and deductive reasoning – ability to combine separate pieces of information, or specific answers to problems, to form general rules or conclusions; includes coming up with a logical explanation for why a series of seemingly unrelated events occur together and deciding if an answer makes sense

  • Possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Driver’s License that will allow unrestricted performance of duties

The employee is regularly exposed to wet or dry conditions, outside weather conditions, variations from extreme cold to extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to moving parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration, and any other type of environment normal for the course of this job.
