Part-Time Maintenance & Facilities Support
Position Summary
The Part-Time Maintenance & Facilities Support team member assists with maintaining safe, clean, attractive, and fully functioning preschool facilities. This position performs minor repairs, groundskeeping, preventive maintenance, setup support, and other facility-related tasks across 4 school locations in the Charlotte and surrounding area. The role works closely with the Facilities Manager and school leadership while minimizing disruption to children, families, and classroom operations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Complete minor repairs, including:
- Replacing door handles, locks, hinges, and cabinet hardware
- Repairing shelves, furniture, gates, fencing, and playground components
- Patching small holes and completing minor painting and touch-ups
- Replacing light bulbs, ceiling tiles, air filters, and other basic items
- Addressing minor plumbing concerns, such as clogged drains, running toilets, or leaking faucets
- Assembling and installing furniture, shelving, bulletin boards, and classroom equipment
- Assist the Facilities Manager with larger projects and facility improvements.
- Conduct routine walkthroughs to identify safety hazards, damaged equipment, maintenance needs, and areas requiring attention.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests submitted by school leadership.
- Perform basic preventive maintenance according to established schedules.
- Maintain accurate records of completed work, needed repairs, supplies used, and items requiring outside professional service.
- Immediately report safety concerns, significant damage, suspected mold, water intrusion, electrical concerns, pest activity, or repairs requiring a licensed contractor.
Groundskeeping and Exterior Maintenance
- Keep school entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, playground surroundings, and outdoor spaces neat and free of debris.
- Perform light landscaping duties, including trimming shrubs, pulling weeds, spreading mulch, raking leaves, and maintaining planted areas.
- Remove trash and discarded materials from exterior areas.
- Blow or sweep walkways, entrances, playground areas, and other outdoor surfaces.
- Assist with pressure washing, seasonal cleanup, and storm preparation or recovery.
- Inspect fences, gates, exterior doors, playground areas, and other outdoor equipment for visible safety concerns.
- Assist with snow or ice preparation and removal when necessary.
- Work between 20-25 hours per week.
Safety and Preschool-Specific Responsibilities
- Complete all work in a manner that protects the safety of children, staff, and families.
- Secure tools, chemicals, hardware, ladders, and repair materials so they are never accessible to children.
- Follow school procedures for entering classrooms and completing work while children are present.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and avoid disrupting classroom routines.
- Follow all applicable child care licensing, workplace safety, fire safety, and company requirements.
- Use only approved products and follow proper labeling, storage, and disposal procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, employees, and school operations.
Additional Support
- Move and arrange furniture, classroom materials, deliveries, and equipment.
- Assist with room setups for training, school events, inspections, and special programs.
- Transport maintenance materials and supplies between school locations as assigned.
- Help organize maintenance closets, storage areas, and facility supplies.
- Monitor inventory and notify the Facilities Manager when supplies or replacement items are needed.
- Support emergency facility needs when reasonably available.
- Perform other facility-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous maintenance, handyman, landscaping, construction, or facilities experience is preferred.
- General knowledge of basic repairs and safe use of hand and power tools.
- Ability to recognize when work requires a licensed plumber, electrician, HVAC technician, or other qualified professional.
- Dependable transportation and the ability to travel between assigned preschool locations.
- Strong reliability, time management, organization, and follow-through.
- Ability to communicate professionally with school leaders, employees, families, vendors, and contractors.
- Willingness to complete required background checks, health requirements, orientation, and safety training.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to perform the essential responsibilities of the position safely, with or without reasonable accommodation, including:
- Regularly standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, climbing, pushing, and pulling.
- Safely using ladders, hand tools, and basic power tools.
- Working indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
- Frequently lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds independently.
- Safely lifting or moving items weighing up to 100 pounds with appropriate assistance or material-handling equipment.
- Maintaining the physical stamina and overall ability necessary to perform maintenance and groundskeeping duties safely throughout the scheduled work period.
