CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: PT LIFEGUARD

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens using the pool and its facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Observes and oversees the activities of swimmers; scans the water; enforces pool rules; maintains discipline at facility; takes preventive safety actions; rescues distressed swimmers; provides emergency first aid and CPR; performs other emergency life-saving services as needed.

Maintains swimming pool and facility; opens pool facility for scheduled pool hours; monitors, regulates, and records pool chemical levels; monitors and regulates temperature of pool water; vacuums pool; cleans tiles; monitors water temperature; diagnoses pool water and administers appropriate chemicals; cleans restrooms, locker rooms, walkways, pool deck, and pool furniture; stocks paper goods; maintains related documentation.

Provides information to individuals regarding pool policies, procedures, programs, fees and other issues; responds to questions/complaints and initiates problem resolution.

Checks in class participants; Maintains inventories of supplies, forms, and equipment; ensures availability of adequate supplies to complete work activities; initiates requests for needed materials, equipment, and supplies.

Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, chemical reports, attendance records, or other documents.

Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, policies, procedures, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

Communicates with supervisor, City employees, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction.

Maintains an awareness of new products, methods, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate. Attends in-service trainings, maintains certification, maintains required swimming skills.

Operates rescue equipment, pool vacuum, pressure washer, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions. Works a variety of shifts to include days, nights, and weekends.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required, requested, and assigned.

Must be at least 16 years of age. Must be able to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability : Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.

Sensory Requirements : Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors : Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
