Job summary

The City of New Braunfels, DAS REC, New Braunfels Recreation Center, seeks enthusiastic lifeguards to ensure safe, high‑quality aquatic programs for the community. This role involves guarding, teaching water safety, and assisting with facility operations at the DAS REC aquatic facilities.

Applicants must be at least 15 years old with 1 year of customer service experience and hold ARC Lifeguard/First Aid, CPR/AED certifications; a Texas Driver’s License is required.

Qualifications

  • Must be fifteen (15) years of age and have one year of customer service/public interaction experience.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer, and Administering Emergency Oxygen certifications are required; WSI preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure high quality aquatic programs and services for the community.
  • Open/close aquatic area at appropriate times.
  • Conduct water tests and enforce pool rules.
  • Provide safety surveillance and respond to injuries or emergencies.
  • Instruct swimming and water safety to various ages.
  • Attend in-service training and maintain rescue skills.

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.Assists in ensuring the delivery of high quality and consistent aquatic programs and services to the community.Prepares and assists in maintaining facilities including but not limited to DAS REC, New Braunfels Recreation Center in a safe condition and to meet community needs; coordinated in alignment with the City’s strategic objectives, policies and procedures, and State and Federal laws.Assists in promoting departmental programs and city-wide special event coordination and setup.Opening and closing aquatic area at appropriate times.Conducting and recording water tests enforcing all pool rules.Preventing injuries and minimizing hazardous situations.Providing safety surveillance at all times or when on stand.Handling all injuries, accidents and emergency situations as they arise (contact Pool Manager for any assistance).Instruct various ages in swimming, water safety, and other aquatic programming.Completing assigned cleaning duties.Attending in-service training as scheduled.Maintaining life safety and rescue skills at rescue ready levels over the duration of employment.Completing other duties as assigned.We’ll train you, but see below for your education and experience that matters most for this role:Education and Experience:Must be fifteen (15) years of age; AND one (1) year customer service/public interaction experience required, with aquatic facility experience preferred.Required Licenses or Certifications:Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s LicenseMust possess or obtain before beginning work: American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid certification, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer certification and Administering Emergency Oxygen certification.American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification is preferred.Required Knowledge of:Principles and practices of excellent customer service.Required Skill in:Interpreting customer and facility needs and solving customer service and public relations issues.Responding to emergencies and determining corrective actions using available resources.Establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with City employees, facility lessees and guests, event sponsors and vendors, and the general public.Effective, clear and concise communication.Your Work Environment:Work is performed in an office environment and all weather conditions, with potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, wet surfaces, pool maintenance equipment, infectious diseases and blood borne pathogens; is subject to sitting, standing, bending and reaching for extended periods of time; and must be able to safely pull, push, lift and carry items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.Must be able to work flexible work schedule and irregular hours including weekdays, weekends, holidays and evenings.May be required to work immediately before, during or after an emergency or disaster.NOTE: This position is designated safety and/or security sensitive.The City of New Braunfels is an equal opportunity employer.
