Job description

The Department of Music is seeking a part-time faculty member to teach one section of Black Popular Music. The course will be offered online and asynchronously during Northeastern's summer II semester (June 30 - August 18, 2025). The class will be capped at 100 students, with appropriate grading support provided.

MUSC 2101. Black Popular Music (4 Hours)

This course surveys, investigates, and analyzes black popular music from the end of the 19th century to the present. Through critical listening and analytical thinking, students will explore black popular culture as a means of expression, communication, and identity, focusing on representation, values, and aesthetics using interdisciplinary sources and methodologies. The course emphasizes intersections of creativity, technology, performance, music industry impact, audience reception, and cultural politics. Students are expected to complete daily exercises and weekly discussion forums, applying critical thinking to synthesize material, perform comparative analyses, relate lessons to key themes, and connect the curriculum to their own musical experiences.

Qualifications

A PhD is preferred, or equivalent professional experience. Previous college-level teaching experience and broad knowledge of Humanities are highly desirable.
