Position Information

Position Title: Associate Instructor – Kinesiology

Position ID: FY18/19-801POOL

Position Summary

PART‑TIME , ASSOCIATE FACULTY POOL – This part‑time position is for an Associate Instructor teaching lecture‑discussion courses in day, evening, Saturday, or online/distance education formats during Spring, Summer, and/or Fall semesters.

Assignment

The assignment may require teaching lecture‑discussion courses during daytime, evening, or on Saturday and/or in an on‑line/distance education format. Work location is Mission College, Santa Clara, CA. This position is represented by the West Valley‑Mission Federation of Teachers (WVMFT / AFT Local 6554).

Salary and Benefits

Salary is a percentage of workload, up to a maximum of 67% of a full‑time load, prorated based on an initial hiring salary range of $36,191 – $52,297 per semester. Benefits are as per the West Valley‑Mission Community College District policy.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education – Possess any one of the following:
    • Master’s degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education; OR
    • Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND a master’s degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy; OR
    • A valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in Kinesiology; OR
    • The equivalent of the above.
  • Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio‑economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.

  • Experience in teaching a variety of classes at the community college level.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction for assigned courses, including preparation for in‑class or on‑line/distance education activities, evaluation of students’ work, and consultation with students outside of class or online.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records required by the college.
  • Submit attendance rosters and grade reports when due.
  • Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices.
  • Maintain office hours each week, at .5 hours per week per section.
  • Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
  • Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course, as per instructions in the Faculty Handbook.
  • Refer students to appropriate college sources for counseling and other student services.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the member’s area of expertise.
  • Work cooperatively within the college community.
  • Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
  • Foster a positive working environment free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
  • Demonstrate respect for the dignity of each individual.
Other Duties

Additional duties may be assigned as necessary to support the college’s mission and instructional activities.

Equivalency Information
  • Submit the District’s Equivalency Application if your degree does not match the discipline(s) stated in the Minimum Qualifications.
  • List accurately and completely courses that match the required degree.
  • Do NOT attach documents such as course evaluations.
Selection Process
  • Applications will be screened by appropriate department representatives on an as‑needed basis. Qualified applicants who best meet the division’s needs will be contacted for an interview.
  • Travel expenses to attend the interview are the candidate’s responsibility.
  • Applications remain in the online system for 1 year. Part‑time pools are refreshed yearly, and applicants may be notified of opportunities to re‑submit application.
