Qualifications

Job Description

Purpose and Scope: The PT Interpreter I provides intermediate-level sign language interpretation for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, faculty, staff, and administration, ensuring compliance with Section 504 and ADA, and promoting communication equity.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Provide Sign Language translation across various settings and for all LSC locations.
  2. Analyze content to ensure accurate interpretation.
  3. Communicate client information and concerns to supervisors.
  4. Research and prepare for interpreting assignments.
  5. Model positive and inclusive behavior.
  6. Participate in department meetings and initiatives.
  7. Review and improve processes and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Fluency in Sign Language and English, with proficiency in idioms and cultural understanding.
  • Knowledge of Sign Language and English structure and grammar.
  • Understanding of relevant policies, regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to maintain confidentiality.

Physical Abilities:

  • Dexterity for extended Sign Language communication.
  • Visual and physical ability to perform interpreting duties.

Work Schedule and Conditions:

  • Assignments vary in time and location, including evenings and weekends.
  • Work environment includes climate-controlled indoor settings and outdoor or laboratory environments.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate degree and 3+ years of related experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • Active BEI Basic certification or recognized equivalent.
  • Reliable transportation within the service area.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
