Job summary

University of California, Irvine's Division of Continuing Education seeks part-time instructors to teach on a course-by-course basis in the Corporate Education Department at client locations in Southern California. These positions are not faculty appointments and involve classroom and online delivery.

Instructors will develop syllabi, deliver materials, use Canvas LMS, evaluate learners, and complete administrative tasks while upholding UC Irvine's standards.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree from an accredited institution in a related discipline.
  • Professional certification relevant to the subject area (e.g., PMP).
  • 8–10 years of professional work experience in the subject area.
  • Ability to teach adults and working professionals with current knowledge of the field.
  • Commitment to high academic standards and integrity.
  • Proficiency with instructional technology and willingness to learn.
  • Excellent oral and written communication.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and update course syllabi with the Program Director using the approved syllabus template.
  • Prepare and deliver course materials and assessments in the assigned format.
  • Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System as the course support platform.
  • Communicate teaching objectives and learning outcomes to learners and outline grading policies.
  • Evaluate learner achievement of outcomes and assign grades.
  • Post final learner grades to the transcript system by set deadlines.
  • Respond to learner questions and learning needs in a timely manner.
  • Handle learner inquiries about final grades and consult with the Director as needed.
  • Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field of practice.
  • Participate in required orientations and complete mandatory training programs by UC Irvine deadlines.
  • Complete required administrative tasks timely, including hiring paperwork, quarterly syllabus submissions, posting bio and photo on the UCI DCE website, signing quarterly contracts, ordering texts, and communicating AV and classroom needs.
  • Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies with domestic and international learner populations.
  • Allow learners to review their final exams/papers for up to 13 months after the last class session.
  • Use subject‑matter expertise and additional resources to enhance the curriculum, including arranging guest speakers if appropriate.
  • Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to fully engage participants and reinforce learning.
  • Update materials periodically and monitor course evaluations to make curricular adjustments and improvements.
  • Participate in consultative activities with potential clients to determine customization needs of course materials.

Position Overview

The Division of Continuing Education (DCE) at the University of California, Irvine seeks part‑time instructors on a course‑by‑course basis for classroom and online teaching in the Corporate Education Department at client locations in Southern California. These positions are not faculty appointments.

Salary Range

A reasonable estimate for this position is $175 – $7,000, based on the number of courses assigned and enrollment numbers.

Qualifications
  • Basic qualifications (required at time of application):
    • Advanced degree from an accredited institution in a related discipline
    • Current professional certification relevant to the subject area (e.g., PMP for Project Management)
  • Additional qualifications:
    • 8‑10 years of professional work experience in the subject area
    • Current knowledge of, and demonstrated proficiency in, the subject area
    • Commitment to the highest level of academic standards and integrity
    • Highly effective oral and written communication skills
    • Proficiency (or willingness to learn) in the use of instructional technology
    • Comfort teaching adult, working professionals
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Experience designing/revising curriculum and measuring learner performance
