City of Turlock is seeking a Part-Time Fleet Maintenance Worker to assist Fleet Staff with equipment maintenance, repairs, and general housekeeping duties. The role supports preventive care, battery work, lubrication, and tire service for light and heavy equipment.

Job description

The City of Turlock is accepting applications for the Part-Time Fleet Maintenance Worker position. This vacancy is in the Municipal Services Department. This individual will assist the Fleet Staff with equipment maintenance, repairs and general housekeeping duties.

Essential Functions

• Lubricate equipment with the use of lubrication tools.
• Inspect, charge, and replace batteries.
• Change and repair tires on light and heavy equipment.
• Wash and otherwise keep shop and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
• May assist Fleet Maintenance Mechanics in mechanical and repair work.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge of

• Minor maintenance of automotive and other equipment.
• Oils, greases, and lubrication devices, and other tools and materials used in servicing equipment.
• Methods and materials used in cleaning and washing automotive equipment.

Ability to

• Learn to perform minor mechanical maintenance and repair work.
• Lubricate a wide variety of mechanical equipment.
• Read manufacturer's lubrication charts.
• Identify automotive parts and supplies.
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Maintain servicing records.

Desirable Experience

Six (6) months of experience involving automotive, light duty and heavy-duty equipment maintenance.

Training

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12) grade. Must provide a copy of High School Diploma or GED Certificate at time of application. A copy of a College Degree from an accredited and regionally accepted institution will be accepted in lieu of a High School Diploma.

License

Possession of an appropriate, valid California Driver's License at the time of appointment, to be maintained as a condition of continued employment.

Physical Conditions

Maintain the following physical abilities: see well enough to read, write and make observations, operate hand and power tools, vehicles and heavy equipment; hear well enough to converse on the radio, telephone and in person; bodily mobility to walk, bend, stand, crouch or climb for extended periods of time, operate assigned equipment and vehicles and perform heavy manual labor for extended periods; ability to tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing essential functions and be able to lift equipment as necessary.

An eligibility list will be established from this recruitment that will be valid for six (6) months. All employees are required to serve a twelve (12) month probationary period.

Veteran's Preference System

The City of Turlock has adopted a veteran's preference system (effective January 1, 2002). The percentage score achieved through an entrance (non-promotional) examination which ranks applicants on an eligibility list shall be adjusted to provide: (a) one (1) percentage point added to the final test score for each six (6) months of active service during a time of armed conflict, up to a maximum of five (5) points, and (b) five (5) percentage points added to the final test score for veterans who are disabled as a result of active military service during a time of armed conflict, regardless of length of service. To receive preference points, applicants must provide supporting documentation and proof of honorable discharge. In no event shall an applicant receive more than a five (5) point adjustment. This request should be made in section #12 of the employment application form.

Benefits

Sick Leave

The City of Turlock amended a Paid Sick Leave Policy on December 23, 2023. An employee who, on or after July 1, 2015, works for 30 or more days within a year from the beginning of employment is entitled to paid sick leave. Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of one hour per every 30 hours worked. Accrual shall begin on the first day of employment or July 1, 2015, whichever is later. Paid sick leave shall carry over to the following year of employment and is capped at 80 hours or ten days.

Hourly Rate Of Pay

$16.90 - $23.04 per hour

Hours Of Work

Hours and days may vary. This position shall not exceed twenty (20) hours per week or 960 hours per fiscal year.
