Job summary

Flagship Pioneering is seeking a hands-on Experimental Systems Intern in Cambridge, MA for 25–30 hours/week over 3–6 months with a potential transition to full-time. You will design experiments, build fixtures, run tests, and keep meticulous records at the intersection of chemistry, sensing hardware, and experimental design.

The role targets senior undergraduates or master's students with lab experience in analytical chemistry, sensors, microfluidics, or hardware testing, and comfort with CAD/3D

Qualifications

  • Pursuing or recently completed a BS or MS in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, bioengineering, or related field.
  • Hands-on laboratory or experimental experience, ideally involving analytical chemistry, sensors, materials, environmental measurement, microfluidics, or hardware testing.
  • Familiarity with experimental controls, replicates, concentration/dilution calculations, contamination control, and basic data interpretation.
  • Comfortable building simple fixtures using CAD, 3D printing, laser-cutting, tubing, fasteners, or similar tools.
  • Ability to work independently at the bench and communicate deviations promptly.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute controlled small molecule sensing experiments.
  • Build and iterate experimental fixtures for headspace exposure and environmental control.
  • Prepare concentration-series, blanks, and recovery experiments with defined analytes.
  • Characterize sensor response, drift, and reproducibility.
  • Maintain organized experimental records and metadata for traceability.
  • Review QC plots and distinguish true sensor signals from artifacts.
  • Support planning, documentation, and workflow execution using AI-enabled tools.
  • Contribute ideas for automation and higher-throughput experiments.
