Job summary

The Salvation Army Southern California is seeking an Assistant Culinary Instructor to support the Culinary Training Academy. You will help deliver approved curriculum, supervise kitchen operations in the absence of the Culinary Instructor, and assist students toward successful program completion.

Responsibilities include coordinating instruction, maintaining records, supporting catering for events, and ensuring safety and cleanliness in the kitchen.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; culinary program certification preferred.
  • Culinary program certification or 3+ years in hospitality may fulfill requirements.
  • Strong organizational and leadership capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of food service ordering, inventory, budgeting, preparation, servicing, cleaning and equipment maintenance.
  • Clear reading/writing skills and the ability to communicate with students and staff.
  • Teamwork, multitasking, and confidentiality of sensitive materials.

  • Schedule pickup of supplies and donations.
  • Research methods to minimize food expenses and maintain inventories.
  • Maintain weekly student and volunteer assignment schedules.
  • Develop weekly menus using donated foods that are creative, nutritious, and appealing.
  • Conduct monthly physical inventory of kitchen supplies and usage records.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Assistant Culinary Instructor

This position assists with the day‑to‑day operations of the Culinary Training Academy program. Responsibilities include instruction of approved curriculum, execution of training, and assisting students toward successful program completions. The incumbent supervises kitchen operations in the absence of the Culinary Instructor or Kitchen Manager.

Key Duties
  • Coordinate teaching and instruction for culinary students.
  • Instruct students in culinary theory, lab exercises, and hands‑on training.
  • Assist the Culinary Instructor in teaching and supervising students.
  • Track and maintain records of graduating students in collaboration with the Student Support Specialist and Culinary Instructor/Kitchen Manager.
  • Assist with supervising kitchen personnel, including volunteers, during shifts.
  • Assist the Culinary Instructor/Kitchen Manager with catering duties and emergency responses.
  • Provide meal service for special events and public relations events.
  • Prepare meals, manage food storage and receipt of goods.
  • Report problems in writing through incident or maintenance reports.
  • Maintain efficient kitchen operations, including food procurement, preparation, storage, sanitization, and cleanliness.
  • Ensure safe, sanitary, and nutritious food preparation.
  • Schedule pickup of supplies and donations.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required. Certified from a Culinary Program or at least 3 years of hospitality experience.
  • Alignment with The Salvation Army’s mission and values, especially ministering to individuals in recovery.
  • Organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of food service ordering, inventory management, budgeting, preparation, servicing, cleaning, and equipment maintenance.
  • Reading comprehension of simple to complex instructions, writing clear correspondence, and presenting information to students and staff.
  • Food handler’s certification at the time of employment and completion of manager level ServeSafe training within 60 days.
  • Team‑work and multitasking ability.
  • Confidentiality of sensitive materials and information.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent exposure to wet or humid conditions; occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles; extreme cold and heat; moderate noise level.
  • Hands, fingers, hold, feel, taste, or smell required.
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Capability to grasp, push, and pull objects; reach overhead; use telephone; lift or move up to 100 lbs.
  • Use of computer and basic office equipment (PC, fax, telephone, calculator, copier, printer).
