Job summary

City of Savannah seeks a Part-Time Detective for the Criminal Investigations Division. You will conduct follow-up investigations, collect and preserve evidence, and assist prosecutors with case preparation and testimony. Flexible schedule up to 19 hours weekly, coordinated with the Detective Sergeant.

Ideal candidates have Georgia P.O.S.T. certification, 3+ years in law enforcement, and the ability to work evenings or weekends as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
• Current Georgia P.O.S.T. certification as a peace officer, or eligibility for certification/reinstatement.
• Minimum of three (3) years of sworn law enforcement experience; prior detective experience preferred.
• Valid driver's license with acceptable driving history.
• Must complete background, credit check, drug screen, psychological evaluation, and physical exam.
• No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
• Flexible availability; some evenings, weekends, or on-call hours may be necessary.

Responsibilities

• Conduct follow-up investigations of assigned criminal cases including property, financial crimes, crimes against persons, and cold cases as assigned.
• Review initial incident reports, identify investigative leads, and develop case strategies.
• Locate, interview, and obtain statements from victims, witnesses, and suspects per constitutional and departmental rules.
• Maintain detailed, accurate case files documenting all investigative activity.
• Identify, collect, preserve, and process physical and digital evidence.
• Submit evidence to GCIB/forensic labs and track results.
• Review video, phone, and financial records.
• Prepare and execute search and arrest warrants; draft supporting affidavits.
• Present cases to the District Attorney's Office; brief ADAs on facts and evidence.
• Testify in municipal, state, superior, and federal proceedings; including grand jury.
• Prepare clear investigative reports, supplements, and case summaries.
• Coordinate with patrol, crime scene, and analysts on active investigations.
• Maintain liaison with federal, state, and local agencies on shared cases.
• Communicate with victims' families professionally; attend trainings.
• Enter/retrieve data from GCIC/NCIC and department systems.
• Assist with major case callouts and critical incidents.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
