This is a hands-on advising role for someone who enjoys working directly with students, following up consistently, keeping clear notes, and helping young people move through real barriers like FAFSA, verification, balances, registration, housing, transportation, or unclear next steps.

Position Overview

The SEED Foundation seeks a Part-Time College Success Advisor to serve on the front line of our college transition and success efforts. This person will support the College Transition & Success team with direct student follow-up, advising appointments, FAFSA/state aid and enrollment tasks, graduate outreach, and CoPilot documentation. This is a hands‑on advising role for someone who enjoys working directly with students, following up consistently, keeping clear notes, and helping young people move through real barriers like FAFSA, verification, balances, registration, housing, transportation, or unclear next steps.

This position is part‑time (20 hours per week) and requires the advisor to be based in the Washington, DC/Maryland/Northern Virginia area. This is not a remote role. The advisor will provide approximately 10 hours of support each week at SEED DC and 10 hours each week at SEED MD, with a focus on senior advising, FAFSA/state aid follow‑up, enrollment steps, student and family outreach, and CoPilot documentation. The advisor will work closely with the college counseling teams at both schools to coordinate student support.

While based at each school, the advisor may also provide virtual or in‑person advising to SEED graduates as part of their assigned CTS responsibilities.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Advising and Program Support (High School Seniors and Graduates)
  • Support college transition and financial aid advising appointments with SEED seniors and families.
  • Maintain regular communication with CTS team members and designated staff at SEED MD and SEED DC about students who need follow‑up.
  • Support CTS‑led staff trainings, FAFSA workshops, advising days, and student transition events as needed.
  • Conduct virtual and in‑person follow‑up with SEED graduates around enrollment, financial aid, bills, registration, academic concerns, transfer questions, re‑enrollment, scholarship questions, and connection to campus resources.
  • Visit local SEED graduates at colleges, campuses, or community locations when assigned and approved by the CTS Director.
  • Assist SEED graduates with postsecondary transferring, entry/re‑entry, and/or access to community‑based resources.
  • Maintain consistent communication with graduates via phone, email, text, and social media.
  • Partner with school‑based college counseling staff and the CTS team on programming.
  • Follow up with students who miss mandatory advising appointments, FAFSA workshops, or key enrollment deadlines.
  • Help students complete next steps after advising meetings, including FAFSA corrections, verification documents, award letter follow‑up, deposit reminders, housing steps, orientation, registration, and balance questions.
  • Help update student contact information and confirm the best way to reach seniors and graduates.
  • Work alongside the college counseling teams at SEED MD and SEED DC to make sure students know what needs to happen next and who is following up.
Data Tracking & Advising Insights
  • Maintain accurate advising notes in CoPilot, including outreach attempts, student concerns, barriers, next steps, and follow‑up dates.
  • Use student information and advising notes to identify who needs follow‑up and what action should happen next.
  • Track student outcomes and engagement consistently.
  • Update CoPilot and CTS trackers after advising meetings, graduate outreach, missed appointment follow‑up, and student/family contact.
  • Keep contact information current for seniors and graduates so CTS can reach students quickly when follow‑up is needed.
Requirements
Essential Experience, Skills, and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree required. At least 1‑3 years of experience supporting students in a school, college access, college success, youth development, higher education, or community‑based setting preferred.
  • Understanding of financial aid, including FAFSA and state aid programs in DC and Maryland.
  • Strong follow‑through. This role requires someone who will keep calling, texting, emailing, documenting, and checking back until the next step is clear.
  • Experience with individual and group college success advising sessions.
  • Familiarity with college matching, affordability, financial aid, and Right Fit advising is helpful.
  • Highly capable of dealing with sensitive issues and being discreet.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with creative and positive energy for working with youth.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team while managing multiple tasks.
  • Comfort keeping clear notes, updating student records, and using data to guide follow‑up.
  • Strong administrative, database management, and records maintenance skills to handle confidential material.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (especially MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel), and Google Workspace.
  • Comfort with student information and customer relations systems.
  • Ability to travel regularly between SEED DC and SEED MD.
