Job description

Pottawattamie County Veterans Service Office is hiring a part-time Case Worker I.

Part-time, entry level trainee. Incumbents are expected to develop knowledge of the administrative procedures, policies, and laws governing veterans and/or their survivors benefits in order to provide advocacy, information and offer solutions to their concerns. This position requires regular face to face interaction with clients and the general public.

Utilize interviewing techniques to assist veterans with completing applications for assistance, pension, service-connected disabilities, social security benefits, etc., including obtaining proper forms required to determine eligibility.

Develop assessment, counseling, and problem-solving techniques to advise veterans and their survivors in financial budgeting, job search skills, and personal issues.

Manage caseload and keep accurate, detailed records as required by state and federal law.

Maintain complex knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, and requirements.

Partner with agencies to provide resources to veterans and survivors.

Demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity regardless of socioeconomic background, ethnicity, or disability status.

Share administrative duties with other Case Workers.

Attend outreach events and staff satellite/mobile office.

Other duties as assigned

Within one year of hire, required completion of:

  • Accreditation through the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers (to include an assigned accreditation number by the Office of General Counsel
  • Certification from the Iowa Department of Veteran Affairs as mandated by the Code of Iowa, Chapter 35, 35A and 35B
  • Obtain a Federal Access (PIV) Card through the Department of Veteran Affairs

Proficiency with Windows-based, various other software applications, and telecommunications equipment.

Compile and submit required reports and statistics obtained through personal interviews and investigations.

Handle multiple tasks simultaneously, under pressure.

Utilize logic, critical thinking, and sound judgment to analyze data, problem solve, and make rapid decisions from information that may be confusing, hostile, disjointed and/or incomplete.

Build cooperative, professional relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds, teams, and external agencies.

Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate tact and trustworthiness with sensitive information.

Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and authorization to work in the U.S. (citizen or legal resident) and a clean motor vehicle record

Ability to pass a drug screening and background investigation that meets all local, state, and federal requirements (no felony or serious/aggravated misdemeanor convictions)

Strong attention to detail, accuracy, patience, and empathy

Willing and able to work mobile office in other counties

Work hours may occasionally be required before or after daylight

Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance
