PRIMARY PURPOSE

Part-time Campus Safety Specialist within the Campus Safety Department reports directly to the Campus Safety Supervisor. This dual-role position supports the safety and security of the Lewis & Clark College community by performing both officer and dispatcher duties, depending on departmental needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Patrol and Security Operations
  • Conduct vehicle, foot, and bicycle patrols across campus to monitor safety conditions and ensure the security of buildings and grounds.
  • Monitor campus for suspicious activity, enforce college policies, and identify potential safety hazards.
  • Respond promptly to alarms (e.g., intrusion, fire, panic) and take appropriate action.
• Emergency Response and First Aid
  • Provide first response to medical emergencies, administering first aid, CPR, and AED as needed.
  • Coordinate with emergency responders and campus personnel for appropriate care and communication during crises.
  • Support emergency procedures during weather events, natural disasters, or hazardous material incidents.
• Enforcement and Policy Adherence
  • Enforce campus policies related to safety, including conduct, substance use, and access control.
  • Investigate policy violations and criminal activity, documenting incidents accurately.
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement and external agencies as needed.
• Public Service and Campus Assistance
  • Escort students, employees, and visitors to enhance personal safety, especially during after-hours events.
  • Assist visitors and community members, including unlocking buildings and vehicle issues.
  • Represent Campus Safety with professionalism and respect while providing customer service and public engagement.
• Reporting and Documentation
  • Maintain accurate reports of incidents, safety violations, and emergency responses.
  • Complete daily activity logs and submit information promptly through security software and communication systems.
• Campus Safety Dispatcher Duties
  • Dispatch Campus Safety personnel via radio in response to calls for service.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with students, employees, and visitors.
  • Answer multi-line phone system and respond to emails in a timely and courteous manner.
• Customer Service and Support
  • Deliver exceptional customer service while interacting with campus community members and visitors.
  • Handle inquiries about parking, Campus Safety policies, and department services with professionalism.
  • Create and issue ID cards for employees and students using campus ID card software.
• Database and System Maintenance
  • Perform database checks and maintain accurate and timely records in Campus Safety systems.
  • Use various computer software systems to support department operations.
  • Troubleshoot and report basic system issues to maintain operational continuity.
• Operational Readiness
  • Regularly monitor campus systems, alarms, and communication channels to ensure timely officer response.
  • Assist with office and dispatch area organization and cleanliness.
  • Perform related administrative and operational duties to support departmental success.
• Other Duties as Assigned
  • Perform any additional tasks as directed by the Campus Safety Supervisor.

• Knowledge of campus safety protocols, security procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., Clery Act, FERPA, Title IX).
• Proficiency in law enforcement and security practices, including emergency response, incident reporting, and crowd management.
• Strong communication skills, including clear verbal and written correspondence across multiple channels.
• Proficient in using computer systems, radio communications, incident management software, mobile apps, and records management systems.
• Excellent judgment and decision-making skills under pressure, with a commitment to professional integrity and confidentiality.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

• High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
• Two years of experience in campus safety, private security, law enforcement, or a related field with experience in dispatching (2 years of full-time front desk work experience, or equivalent, may substitute for the dispatching experience requirement).
• DPSST certification for unarmed private security.
• First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (or ability to obtain within the first 90 days of employment).
• Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

• Associate’s degree in criminal justice, public safety, or a related field.
• Four years of experience in campus security, law enforcement, military police, or as a reserve police officer.
• Additional certifications in specialized safety or emergency response areas.
• Experience with emergency response coordination in higher education settings.
• Proficiency with Lenel Security, ID card software, and emergency notification systems (e.g., Blackboard Connect).

Schedule:
Position 1: Saturday - Sunday (6am-2pm) and every other Thursday.
Position 2: Sunday-Monday 10p-6a, and every other Wednesday.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Combination of office and field environments, involving a mix of outdoor and indoor environments on the campus and in surrounding areas.
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a computer and monitoring radio and phone systems.
• Prolonged periods of walking, standing, and operating a motor vehicle, bicycle, or on foot to patrol the campus and surrounding areas.
• Ability to lift, carry, and move objects up to 50 pounds, including safety equipment or emergency supplies.
• Occasional use of stairs, kneeling, or crawling when accessing buildings or responding to emergencies.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, or snow.
• Physical stamina to handle potentially stressful and physically demanding situations, such as responding to emergencies, assisting in evacuations, or managing incidents of violence or medical crises.
• Ability to observe and respond to hazards and threats from a distance, and to communicate effectively with a wide range of people under various circumstances.
• Ability to successfully pass a timed Physical Abilities Test (PAT) consisting of a routed walk around campus, climbing up and down a set of stairs, carrying a standard first aid and completing chest compressions on a CPR mannequin.
