Job summary

Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District is seeking a part-time Bus Monitor for the VSCSD Bus Garage in Vinton, IA. The role supports the bus driver, helps supervise students on and around the bus, and ensures safety during transportation to and from school.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, with preferred 2-year college credits or associate degree. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work with school-aged children.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Two-year Associate Degree or 60 college credits preferred.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to operate required equipment safely.
• Experience working with school-aged children preferred.

Responsibilities

• Supervise students while riding, boarding, and exiting the bus.
• Assist students with boarding and alighting the bus safely.
• Monitor and redirect students to maintain safety and minimize distractions.
• Create and enforce seating arrangements for safety and efficiency.
• Observe and record information regarding student behavior.
• Maintain discipline on the bus and complete ODRs when necessary.
• Ensure students are secured in seat belts/restraints when available.
• Ensure students follow bus expectations for the ride.
• Assist teachers to help students gain independence where possible.
• Follow instructions regarding walkers, wheelchairs, and mobility devices.
• Report concerns and observations to the supervisor.
