The Part-Time Building Engineer ensures that Deep Roots Charter School is a safe, clean, and functional environment for learning. This individual takes pride in maintaining the school facility and supports the daily operations of the building through skilled, proactive maintenance and repair. The Building Engineer works closely with school leadership to uphold the school's high standards of safety and care, contributing to a joyful and welcoming environment for students, families, and staff. This role is ideal for someone who is reliable, hands-on, and passionate about serving a mission-driven school community. The Part-Time Building Engineer reports to the Director of Operations.

Responsibilities & Duties

Ensure Daily Facility Operations

• Open and secure the building as needed, including performing building walkthroughs to check for safety, cleanliness, and readiness.
• Monitor HVAC systems, lighting, plumbing, and other building systems to ensure they are operating properly.
• Complete routine repairs, minor installations, and maintenance tasks in a timely and professional manner.

Maintain a Safe and Clean Learning Environment

• Respond to urgent facility-related needs, including spills, weather-related issues, or damage to property.
• Support compliance with health and safety codes, fire safety, and security procedures.
• Assist with setting up and breaking down spaces for school events or programs.

Collaborate and Communicate

• Work closely with the Director of Operations to identify maintenance priorities and schedule preventive upkeep.
• Communicate effectively with school staff and leadership about building concerns, solutions, and timelines.
• Maintain accurate logs of maintenance and repair work performed.

Additional Responsibilities

• Assist custodial staff or vendors as needed.
• Participate in school safety drills and emergency response support.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the school's mission.

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Previous experience in building maintenance, engineering, or a facilities-related role preferred.
• Knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry systems strongly preferred.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work with tools and equipment.
• Strong commitment to punctuality, problem-solving, and contributing to a safe and supportive school environment.
