Job summary

City of Washington is seeking a Building Code Inspector to inspect and enforce state and local codes across building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical trades. The role involves field inspections, reviewing plans, advising stakeholders, and maintaining accurate records.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with five years or more of experience in construction or a related field.
• Ability to obtain Level I Standard Certification in two trades within two years of employment.
• Valid NC driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Manage daily route schedule and travel to construction sites.
• Inspect buildings for compliance with building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC codes; issue certificates of compliance.
• Review blueprints and specifications to ensure site conformity with plans.
• Explain code requirements to property owners or contractors and advise on modifications.
• Notify parties of defects and re‑inspect for corrective actions; issue stop-work orders if needed.
• Maintain records and prepare inspection reports; stay updated on code changes and training.
