Job summary

PSI Molded Plastics is seeking an Automation Engineering Intern to contribute to designing and improving electro-mechanical and mechatronic systems. The role involves supporting automated systems development, PLC/HMI programming, and mechanical design tasks within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

The candidate should be pursuing an engineering degree, have basic PLC/HMI knowledge, and be comfortable reading schematics. SolidWorks skills and a proactive, collaborative mindset are valued.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing an engineering degree from an accredited school.
  • Basic understanding of PLC and HMI controls.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics.
  • Basic understanding of robotics controllers and motion profiles (Fanuc or UR Robotics).
  • Basic understanding of mechanical components.
  • Basic understanding of hydraulic circuitry.
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical and creative thinking skills.
  • Ability to work with a team or alone.
  • Self-starter with a passion for Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing, developing, and enhancing electro-mechanical systems and mechatronic devices.
  • Support development of automated systems and software to control them.
  • Modify PLC and HMI programs as needed.
  • Develop design documents for mechanical parts and final products.
  • Maintain technical project files.
  • Identify materials suitable for mechatronic designs.
  • Suggest improvements on production lines or finished products.
  • Implement or test design solutions.
  • Understand client briefs and develop solutions.
  • Select tools and materials for manufacturing processes.
  • Create mechanical models and tolerance analyses.
  • Research and apply sensors, motion control, or communication technologies.

The Automation Engineer’s responsibilities include improving existing robotics, vision and mechanical systems, developing new product concepts and prototypes, designing, and testing mechanical and electronic systems, and developing and supporting various automated and Robotic systems.

To be successful as an Automation Engineering Intern, you should be able to work within demanding timeframes and develop original, practical solutions to problems. Outstanding automation engineer will draw on a wide range of engineering principles and are not afraid to wander into unchartered territory, as well as ask for help from others.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in Designing, developing, and enhancing electro-mechanical systems and mechatronic devices.
  • Assisting in creation and supporting of automated systems and the software to control them.
  • Enhance or modify existing PLC and HMI programs as needed.
  • Assist in Developing design documents for mechanical parts and final products.
  • Maintain technical project files.
  • Identify and select materials appropriate for mechatronic system designs.
  • Assist in identifying areas of weakness in the production line or finished products and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Implement or test design solutions.
  • Understanding problems or client briefs and developing solutions that satisfy them.
  • Selecting the required tools and materials for the manufacturing process.
  • Create mechanical models and tolerance analyses to simulate mechatronic design concepts.
  • Research, select, or apply sensors, communication technologies, or control devices for motion control, position sensing, pressure sensing, or electronic communication.
  • Attending workshops, training sessions, and conferences to network with others and stay on top of field advancements.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by manager.
Qualifications:

Education and experience required for the role.

  • Currently seeking a degree in one form of Engineering from an accredited school.
  • Basic understanding of PLC and HMI controls.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics
  • Basic understanding of robotics controller and motion profiles, preferably Fanuc or UR Robotics
  • Basic understanding of mechanical components
  • Basic understanding of Hydraulic circuitry
  • Basic understanding of SolidWorks and ability to design within the software
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and creative thinking skills.
  • Ability to work with a team or alone.
  • Self-starter with a passion for Engineering.
