  • Description: The audiologist has the role of developing, supervising, and coordinating a program of audiological services. The audiologist is directly responsible for the total program devised to provide services necessary for the identification, medical referral, and educational follow-up servces for students with hearing loss. The audiologist serves as a consultant to administrators, teachers, speech/language pathologists, teachers of the deaf, other educational personnel, and school nurses.

    Job Summary:
    1. The audiologist organizes an audiological management program that addresses local needs, coordinates audiological services with student services provided by other school and community personnel, assesses the effectiveness of the program, manages facilities and equipment, and works with administrative staff and other school personnel to accomplish program goals and objectives.
    2. The audiologist is responsible for scheduling appointments for audiological evaluation, administering standard diagnostic tests and procedures in keeping with individual student needs, promoting effective interpersonal relations with students and parents, obtaining additional/supplementary diagnostic records, formulating conclusions and recommendations, and interpreting diagnostic information. After conducting an evaluation, the audiologist will write evaluation reports, which should include, but not limited to, all assessment data, a thorough integration of all available data, and realistic recommendations for instruction and intervention.
    3. The audiologist is responsible for making recommendations regarding the need for further audiological or other support services, assisting in obtaining placement and assessment services for other children being considered for exceptional child placement, and providing liaison services designed to effect comprehensive student services. Often, these recommendations are made during a Section 504 and/or IEP meeting; a core function of the audiologist’s role is to attend these meetings, during which the audiologist may explain evaluation results and recommendations, and answer questions about services as they relate to student needs in the total school environment.
    ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
    1. Maintaining Professional Standards: The audiologist adheres to the ethical standards of the speech-language-hearing profession, adheres to established rules, regulations and laws, engages in continuing educational and professional growth activities, develops professional development plans, and maintains open channels of communication with all agencies and individuals providing related services.
    2. Record Keeping/Program Evaluation: The audiologist develops systems for maintaining student and program records.

    Qualifications: Master's or Doctorate degree in audiology from an accredited university
    Hold a current and valid State of North Carolina license as an audiologist
