Job summary

Washtenaw Community College invites applications for a part-time faculty position in astronomy/space science. The successful candidate will teach on-campus courses, prepare lessons, and assess student progress, using a range of learning experiences and materials to meet course objectives.

S/he should hold a master’s degree in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or space science (or related field with 18 graduate credits) and be available mornings, afternoons, or evenings.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or space science, or related field with 18 graduate credits in the above disciplines.
• Recent, successful post-secondary teaching experience in astronomy courses.
• Morning, afternoon, or evening availability to teach on campus two or more days per week.

Responsibilities

• Prepare for and instruct assigned course(s) to meet course objectives and program goals.
• Adhere to course syllabus and assess student achievement.
• Evaluate student progress through exams and day-to-day evaluation.
• Grade assignments in a timely manner and return to students with feedback.
• Support student success through guidance and advising as needed.
• Participate in professional activities and data collection for curriculum development.
• Maintain current professional knowledge and compliance with institutional policies.

• Use technology, including AI-enabled tools where appropriate, to support teaching, learning, student engagement, institutional service, and other professional responsibilities. Ensure such use is consistent with academic standards, professional ethics, confidentiality requirements, institutional policies and procedures, and applicable regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Schedules vary according to class schedules. The terms of employment are based on college enrollment and class enrollment.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Earned master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or space science OR master’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 18 graduate credits in the above disciplines required.
• Recent, successful, post-secondary teaching experience in astronomy courses.
• Morning, afternoon, or evening availability to teach on campus two or more days per week.
